If Goosebumps is going to have a revival, we are all in for it. So many of us grew up on R.L. Stine’s spooky spines, collecting haunted masks and staying out of the basement. The live-action movies may have run their course, but the series is thriving on the small screen. With strong enough ratings and reviews, word came a few months after the first season’s conclusion that a sophomore season would officially mark it as an anthology. Now, we have the official trailer for what has been dubbed Goosebumps: The Vanishing.

As per Disney, Goosebumps: The Vanishing “begins when twins Cece and Devin Brewer are sent to spend a summer in Gravesend, Brooklyn, with their divorced dad. A threat is stirring, and they quickly realize that dark secrets are among them, triggering a chain of events that unravel a profound mystery. As they delve into the unknown, Cece, Devin and their friends — Alex, CJ and Frankie — find themselves entangled in the chilling tale of four teenagers who mysteriously vanished in 1994.”

Jayden Bartels plays Cece, while Sam McCarthy is Devin. Meanwhile, Alex, CJ and Frankie are played by Francesca Noel, Elijah M. Cooper and Galilea La Salvia, respectively. Most of these may not be household names, but David Schwimmer’s presence will bring a bit of star power (and maybe some willingness to watch from parents), just as Jack Black did for the 2015 Goosebumps movie and Justin Long’s familiarity did for season one.

While we dug the first season of Goosebumps enough to give it a 7/10 review, the trailer for The Vanishing does look a lot better in numerous aspects. Unfortunately, it will only consist of eight episodes, whereas the first had 10. There, too, is a bit of disappointment that it won’t come out until January 10th on Disney+ and Hulu, as October would have obviously been the premiere choice for release.

What do you think of the trailer for Goosebumps: The Vanishing? Were you a fan of the first season? Do you think it will improve on it? Say “cheese” and let us know in the comments below!

RLJE Films dropped the first teaser trailer for Ash at New York Comic-Con, a trippy sci-fi horror movie starring Eiza González (3 Body Problem) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) from director Flying Lotus and screenwriter Jonni Remmler.

The official synopsis for Ash: “On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.” The film also stars Iko Uwais (The Raid), Beulah Koale (Next Goal Wins), and Kate Elliott (Wentworth). In addition to directing Ash, Flying Lotus also composed the score.

González has previously teased that you should expect the unexpected with Flying Lotus. “The way his brain works is quite special,” González says of Ash’s director. “He reminds me a lot of David Fincher, who also started in music videos, as someone who is quite interested in pushing boundaries and not being scared of diving into something. But this movie also required someone who had a really authentic and unique artistic take. We couldn’t have been more lucky, because his visual imagery and the way that he spoke to us about the movie really translated to the making of the film. It’s a movie that causes the audience to stay engaged consistently. I love movies that require you to keep thinking and trying to figure out what is actually happening.

Paul added that music was very important to the production. “He was always playing music on set,” Paul said. “Not necessarily his own music, but just stuff that he dug that fit the vibe of where the characters were at. And then, just before rolling, he would start messing with some stuff that he’d been working on and playing it over the speakers, to get us in the mood. Then they’d yell ‘action!’ and we’d cut the music and go into it.

Ash will be released in theaters in 2025, followed by a streaming debut on Shudder. What did you think of the teaser trailer for Ash?

Sam Raimi-produced thriller Don’t Move gets trailer ahead of October Netflix premiere https://www.joblo.com/dont-move-gets-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/dont-move-gets-trailer/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2024 13:20:08 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=796521 The first trailer for Don't Move, a thriller produced by Sam Raimi for Netflix, has received its first trailer.

Netflix is continuing their love of all things dark by releasing the thriller Don’t Move next month. It has been over a year since we got our first look at the movie, so finally getting the trailer is definitely a treat.

Here is the official plot for Don’t Move, which comes to Netflix on October 25th: “A grieving woman hoping to find solace deep in an isolated forest encounters a stranger who injects her with a paralytic agent. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.” That’s a pretty terrifying plot right there, especially if you are someone who has a genuine fear of paralysis or even suffers through it.

Don’t Move stars Kelsey Asbille, who has a very minor history with the genre (albeit of a different variety), having appeared in MTV’s Teen Wolf, but you might be more familiar with her from her role as Monica in Yellowstone and criminal Swanee Capps in season four of Fargo. It also stars Finn Wittrock, who has been on the scene through movies, TV and the stage for the better part of the past 20 years. Rounding out the core cast are Daniel Francis and Moray Treadwell. Don’t Move is directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who had a hand in urban legend-exploring series 50 Stages of Fright. It is written by T.J. Cimfel and David White, the team behind V/H/S Viral and Intruders.

But maybe the biggest draw for fans of the genre is that the movie is produced by Sam Raimi. Raimi has been an active champion for his team on Don’t Move, saying of Schindler and Netto, “I am delighted to collaborate again with our co-directors Adam and Brian on this incredibly frightening and tense story full of so many twists and turns – it will deliver a fantastic horror punch to the audience!” That’s awesome for the directors considering Raimi isn’t only their producer but one of the defining figures of the genre’s modern history.

What do you think of the trailer for Don’t Move? Will you be catching it on Netflix next month?

Krazy House trailer unleashes blood-soaked, gross-out mayhem in horror comedy that might not be for everyone https://www.joblo.com/krazy-house-trailer-nick-frost/ https://www.joblo.com/krazy-house-trailer-nick-frost/#respond Thu, 19 Sep 2024 22:01:39 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=796480 A new trailer for Krazy House starring Nick Frost has been released, which doubles down on the blood-soaked, gross-out mayhem.

XYZ Films has dropped a new trailer for Krazy House, the action-horror comedy which our own Chris Bumbray absolutely hated when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Part ’90s sitcom, part blood-soaked, gross-out mayhem, the Krazy House trailer proudly features its offensive subject matter as a badge of pride. The films stars Nick Frost as Bernie, a religious homemaker who discovers that the Russian workers in his house are, in fact, criminals searching for loot. In order to save his wife and the rest of his studio audience-approved sitcom family, Bernie has to man up and unleash his inner beast. The film was written and directed by Steffen Haars & Flip van der Kuil and stars Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Connolly, Gaite Jansen, and Walt Klink.

Krazy House feels like it’s targeting a very niche audience who might appreciate its shock humour, but that didn’t include Bumbray. “Everything about this film is a disaster right from the start. The pseudo-sitcom gimmick is unfunny and was done much better in the classic viral video Too Many Cooks,” Bumbray wrote in his review. “Frost is doing his best, but the material gives him nothing to work with, as the sitcom gimmick goes on for about forty minutes, while he spends at least another 20 minutes of the movie strung up on a cross (don’t ask) mugging with reaction shots to the chaos around him. Frost drops the accent and re-emerges as a more crazed, badass version of his character (which he seems much more comfortable playing) in the last ten minutes, but by then, the film has devolved into a hopeless satire with nary a laugh in sight.

Bumbray continued: “It’s incredible how many talented people are wasted on this, with Alicia Silverstone deserving far better than Frost’s always-shrieking wife. She and Frost have never been this grating on screen. The movie is going for a bonkers, transgressive vibe, with Entourage star Kevin Connelly turning up late in the game as Jesus Christ himself (he’s actually not bad), with a scene where a man gets violated with a Jesus figurine included. But it’s all just crass exploitation without any substance. Indeed, there’s a place for crass exploitation, but it needs to be backed up by entertainment value. Krazy House is so abysmal that it almost became an endurance test. Frankly, the press screening I saw inspired many walkouts.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

Krazy House will be released on VOD on October 4th.

A couple years ago, Spider One – the frontman of Powerman 5000 and the brother of fellow musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie – made his feature directorial debut with the horror anthology Allegoria. Last year, his second feature – a horror film called Bury the Bride – was released through the Tubi streaming service. His third film, which is called Little Bites, recently secured a worldwide distribution deal through RLJE Films and the Shudder streaming service, and RLJE Films will be giving the film a theatrical and VOD release on October 4th. Its streaming debut on Shudder will follow at a later date. With the theatrical and VOD release date swiftly approaching, a trailer for Little Bites has now arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Written and directed by Spider One, Little Bites centers on Mindy, a young widow and mother who tries to protect her daughter Alice from a flesh eating monster named Agyar. Mindy has been secretly sacrificing her own life by allowing the creature to feast on her body as she keeps Alice hidden away at her grandmother’s house.

Krsy Fox of Allegoria and Bury the Bride plays Mindy and is joined in the cast by Elizabeth Phoenix Caro (The Christmas Chronicles) as Alice and Jon Sklaroff (Gifted) as Agyar. Also in the cast are Chaz Bono (American Horror Story), Lyndsi LaRose (Frank), Mark Kelly (The Hot Zone), Christopher Alvarenga (Last Girl Standing), and genre icons Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street), and Bonnie Aarons (The Nun).

Bono, who also worked on Bury the Bride, serves as an executive producer on Little Bites alongside his mother, Cher, as well as Ian Hoge, Tyler Connolly, and Wendy and Mark Berry. Spider One and Fox’s company OneFox Productions produced.

Spider One told Deadline, “Little Bites began with an unflinching look at my own experience as a parent. An experience that has been and continues to be a complex mess of love, pain, success and failure. Where the best of intentions are constantly countered by the dark forces of self doubt and the external judgment of others. In the film, Mindy’s relationship with her monster, Agyar, is clearly my allegory for parenthood. His bites are her pain. His words are her insecurities. His intentions are to prove Mindy’s failure as a parent. Krsy Fox and Jon Sklaroff delivered beyond my wildest expectations with their portrayals of Mindy and Agyar and I can’t wait to once again team up with Shudder/RLJE and let horror fans to sink their teeth into Little Bites.

We recently heard that Spider One was working on his fourth film, Big Baby.

We were following news of the cat and mouse thriller Unit 234, which is now going by the extended title Unit 234: The Lockup, closely when the film went into production back in 2022… but then it dropped off the radar for a couple of years. Now it’s ready to make its way out into the world, and while we don’t have information on a North American release at this time, we do know that the film is going to receive a digital release in the UK on September 30th, courtesy of Signature Entertainment. In anticipation of that release, a trailer for Unit 234: The Lockup has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Directed by Andy Tennant (Sweet Home Alabama) from a screenplay by first-time feature writer Derek Steiner, Unit 234 sees Orphan, Orphan: First Killand The Last Thing Mary Saw star Fuhrman taking on the role of Laurie Saltair, who discovers the comatose man, Clayton, in Unit 234 of her family’s storage facility, while working the night shift alone. What transpires is a thrill ride of a cat-and-mouse game for Laurie and Clayton to survive the night. Here’s another synopsis, which gives a bit more detail about what’s going on in this movie: A lone employee at a remote storage facility (Fuhrman) discovers an unconscious man locked inside Unit 234, chained to a gurney and missing a kidney. She must then fight to survive a ruthless gang, dead set on retrieving their precious cargo… at any cost.

Jack Huston (House of Gucci) is also in the cast.

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, directing episodes of Moon KnightLoki season 2, and the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, but before they entered the Marvel universe, they were known for making genre films like Resolution, Spring, The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. They’re staying in touch with their roots by serving as executive producers on the upcoming sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different, which stars Riley Dandy of Christmas Bloody Christmas and Adam David Thompson of A Walk Among the Tombstones – and since that film is set to receive a theatrical and digital release on October 4th, a trailer has now made its way online. You can watch it in the embed above.

The feature directorial debut of Michael Felker, the film sees Dandy and Thompson taking on the roles of siblings Joseph and Sidney, who are on the run from the law. The mysterious farmhouse they are staying in inexplicably transports them through time. While attempting to return to their present, a cryptic force emerges and traps them on a strange plot of land, giving them a deathly ultimatum in order to escape. Here’s another synopsis: In order to escape police after a robbery, two estranged siblings lay low in a metaphysical farmhouse that hides them away in a different time. There they reckon with a mysterious force that pushes their familial bonds to unnatural breaking points.

Benson also happens to be in the cast, along with Chloe Skoczen (Get Me Back Up There), Sarah Bolger (Emelie), and newcomer Jori Lynn Felker.

Things Will Be Different was produced by Michael Felker (under his Last Life banner), Shane Spiegel, Jacob Rosenthal, and David Lawson Jr. of Rustic Films. The writer/director/producer provided the following statement: “I made Things Will Be Different for people who love thrillers, noir, and science fiction they can think about. It’s a giant mystery box of a movie with a strong familial core that’s inspired by my own family. Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy are just incredible as Joe and Sid, and I can’t believe they aren’t actually brother and sister. I hope people either ponder their own theories and talk about them after watching, or just sit back and enjoy an emotionally wild and unpredictable ride. Either way you can’t go wrong.

During the Halloween season of 2022, it was announced that Damian Lewis, whose credits include Billions, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Homeland, and Dreamcatcher, would be playing two roles in the supernatural black comedy The Radleys. The film went into production in 2023, with Lewis being joined in the cast by Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), Harry Baxendale (Holmes & Watson), Bo Bragason (The Ballad of Renegade Nell), Jay Lycurgo (Titans), Siân Phillips (I, Claudius), and Shaun Parkes (Small Axe). Now, The Radleys is ready to make its way out into the world this Halloween season, with a theatrical, digital, and VOD release scheduled for October 4th, and with that date swiftly approaching, a trailer for the film has dropped online. You can watch it in the embed above.

Euros Lyn (Heartstopper) directed The Radleys from a script written by Talitha Stevenson, based on a novel by Matt Haig (pick up a copy HERE). Set in a quiet, suburban English town, the film charts the story of the Radleys, who to their neighbours are as ordinary as they come. But beneath the surface, parents Peter (Lewis) and Helen (Macdonald) are concealing a dark secret from their teenage children, Rowan (Baxendale) and Clara (Bragason). They are abstaining vampires, who choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings, making them more and more bloodthirsty by the day. When Peter’s twin brother Will arrives on the scene (also played by Lewis), a proud, practicing vampire who openly embraces his hedonistic, bloodthirsty lifestyle, the family has to confront some home truths.

The adaptation aimed to be “wickedly funny and scarily relatable.” Here’s another synopsis: Award-winning actors Kelly Macdonald and Damian Lewis star in a dark comedy thriller about a seemingly average suburban family with a juicy secret: they are vampires. In the light of day, the Radleys might seem normal, but they can only abstain from their natural cravings for so long until the bloody truth bubbles to the surface and turns their quiet country life upside down.

The Radleys comes to us from Genesius Pictures and was developed with British Comedy Award winner Jo Brand. It’s produced by Debbie Gray. Lewis executive produced through his production company Ginger Biscuit Entertainment. Other executive producers include Julia Stuart and Laura Grange of Sky, Mark Gooder and Alison Thompson of Cornerstone, Peter Touche, Andrea Scarso and Christelle Conan of Ingenious Media, and Julian Gleek of Genesius. The film was financed by Sky and Ingenious Media.

Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) takes the lead in the horror thriller House of Spoils, which is coming to us from Blumhouse Television and Amazon‘s Prime Video. This one has the great Halloween season release date of October 3rd, and with that date right around the corner, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

The film has been written and directed by the duo of Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, whose previous credits include the 2019 film Blow the Man Down, episodes of the recent mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, and episodes of the AMC+ series Moonhaven.

Described as a “tense, psychological and sensuous” thriller, House of Spoils stars DeBose as an ambitious chef who opens her first restaurant—a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate—where she battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, crushing self doubts… and the powerful spirit of the estate’s previous owner who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.

DeBose is joined in the cast by Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), Marton Csokas (The Equalizer), Amara Karan (The Darjeeling Limited), and Arian Moayed (Succession).

Cole told Elle that the House of Spoils production put DeBose through the wringer: “This was a challenging shoot. It was like she’s in every scene. It’s dirty, it’s nasty. Some of these sets, we literally had her crawling in dirt over and over again one night and there was a lot we asked of her.” The movie seems interesting enough to me, so I will probably be including it in my October-long horror movie viewing spree. October is all about watching as many horror movies as possible.

House of Spoils was filmed in Hungary and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, Secret Engine’s Alex Scharfman, Lucas Joaquin, and Drew Houpt, and Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath. Blumhouse Television’s Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold serve as executive producers.

After making thin air terrifying again (sorry, The Happening, you tried) with 2020’s atmospheric and chilling horror film The Invisible Man, Leigh Whannell is taking another bite out of the Universal Monsters rogue’s gallery with Wolf Man. Before everyone logs off for the weekend, Whannell and Blumhouse hit horror fans with a Wolf Man teaser trailer, previewing the filmmaker’s latest bone-chilling horror film.

Today’s Wolf Man teaser trailer begins with footage of a praying mantis stalking an unsuspecting lunch, striking with lightning-fast speed as the meal feels fangs piercing its exterior. As the words Wolf Man steadily slash onto the screen, the footage shows a remote house in Oregon where a mysterious animal waits in the woods. While trying to adjust to their new lives, Christopher Abbott is attacked by what he says is a ferocious wolf-like creature standing on two legs. As the lycanthropy surges through his system, he changes, leaving Julia Garner and Matilda Firth to fend for themselves against a man driven mad by the full moon. The Wolf Man teaser displays what we love about Whannell’s film style: atmosphere, compelling performances, and a bone-chilling ramp-up to an all-out horror fest that promises to leave an impression.

When Universal announced this project in 2020, Ryan Gosling was set to star in it – and it got rolling when Gosling pitched this take on the concept of The Wolf Man to Universal. Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo then fleshed out the ideas into a screenplay (Blum is also married to Blumhouse founder Jason Blum). The story was “believed to be set in present times and in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler with an obvious supernatural twist.” The final version of the script credits Blum and Angelo, as well as Whannell and his wife, Corbett Tuck.

Whannell first signed on to direct the film in 2020 but then dropped out the following year. That’s when Gosling’s Blue Valentine and Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance came on board. Gosling and Cianfrance stepped away from Wolf Man early last year, and then Whannell returned.

Welp, I know what I’ll see during my birthday weekend next year! I’m a major fan of Whannell’s The Invisible Man, and I can’t wait to see what he does with my favorite of Universal’s classic monsters. How about you? What do you think about today’s Wolf Man teaser trailer? Is this what we can expect Abbott’s Wolf Man to look like? I highly doubt it.
