2024 Fall Horror Movie Preview: Everything We Want to See

Nine months of horror releases down, three to go! We’re officially in the “spooky season” portion of the year, the build-up to our favorite holiday, Halloween, and with our 2024 Fall Horror Movie Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the horror movies we can’t wait to check out in the remaining months of this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they might still show up at some point in 2024. Below, you’ll find a list of the movies we’re anxious to see this Halloween season and beyond… so, here we go:

Smile 2

SMILE 2 – Theatrical, October 18

Smile writer/director Parker Finn’s said that if he were to make a sequel to his 2022 horror hit, he would want to make sure it’s “new, exciting, fresh” rather than just a retread of its predecessor. The freshness begins with the casting of Naomi Scott – who was not in Smile – as the lead character in Smile 2, a pop star who begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events while gearing up for her new world tour.

Die Alone Carrie-Anne Moss

DIE ALONE – Theatrical, digital/VOD, October 18

The latest film from WolfCop and Another WolfCop director Lowell Dean, Die Alone drops Frank Grillo of the Purge franchise and Carrie-Anne Moss of the Matrix franchise into a post-apocalyptic world that has been reclaimed by nature and overrun by mysterious creatures, which we’ve previously heard described as “zombie-like monsters.” And the idea of getting to see Frank Grillo and Carrie-Anne Moss fight zombie-like monsters is enough to get us interested in adding this one to our list of Halloween season must-sees.

Don't Move

DON’T MOVE – Netflix, October 25

Produced by genre legend Sam Raimi and directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who directed episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright, Don’t Move stars Yellowstone cast member Kelsey Asbille as a woman who is injected with a paralytic agent by a killer and “must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down.” Sounds interesting, and the involvement of Sam Raimi is enough to make this one a must-see for many genre fans.

Time Cut

TIME CUT – Netflix, October 30

Freaky collaborators Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon have teamed up again to bring us Time Cut, which has been described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.” Kennedy wrote the Time Cut script with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend story editor Sono Patel and Landon produced the film, which has been directed by Hannah MacPherson, director of Sickhouse and the Into the Dark film Pure. Madison Bailey of Outer Banks and Antonia Gentry of Ginny & Georgia star in the film, which is about a teenage girl going back in time to the early 2000s to stop the murder of her sister from ever happening. We were already sold as soon as we saw the “Back to the Future meets Scream” description.

Amy Adams

NIGHTBITCH – Theatrical, December 6

Amy Adams stars in this darkly comic “neo-horror” movie, written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The lead character is a stay-at-home suburban mom who begins to suspect that she might be turning into a dog… and that’s about all we know about this one so far. Scott McNairy plays Adams’ “oft-traveling husband,” while Mary Holland takes on an unspecified role.

Y2K

Y2K – Theatrical, December 6

The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, the apocalyptic horror comedy is another A24 release. This one takes us back to the last day of December 1999, when the world was concerned that technology was going to crash when the calendar switched over to 2000. Things do go terribly wrong in Mooney’s movie, but not in the way anyone was expecting back in ’99. Instead, he has his characters – which include the likes of Jaeden Martell (Stephen King’s It), Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst – fighting for their lives against rebellious machines.

Nosferatu Robert Eggers Willem Dafoe 2024 Horror Preview

NOSFERATU – Theatrical, December 25

Nine years have gone by since it was first announced that The Witch director Robert Eggers was going to be writing and directing a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu. At the end of this year, we’re finally going to be able to see what Eggers – who made The Lighthouse and The Northman in the interim – has done with the concept. Bill Skarsgard (It) plays the title character and is joined in the cast by Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol), Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Emma Corrin (The Crown), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), Simon McBurney (The Conjuring 2), and the legendary Willem Dafoe, who plays a crazy vampire hunter. Focus Features wanted to give this film “a prime holiday season release”, so they clearly believe Eggers has turned in something special.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

UPDATE: Today is October 8th, and that means Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has now received its digital release! On Amazon, you can rent the movie for the price of $19.99, or buy it for $24.99.

The original article follows:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it HERE), reached theatres on September 6th (you can read our review at THIS LINK), and over the last three and half weeks the movie has managed to rack up almost $375 million at the global box office. Now it’s just about time for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to come home, as Deadline reports that Warner Bros. will giving it a PVOD and digital release on October 8th. It will be available for purchase or rental on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and more on that date. The 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD physical media release will follow on November 19th.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was in development hell for decades before it finally got made. In 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel that was going to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite that script, Pamela Norris did rewrite it, and Warner Bros. offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite. He turned it down. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write and produce a new version of a sequel in 2011. Mike Vukadinovich was brought on to rewrite his script in 2017.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of Wednesday, have written the screenplay for Beetlejuice 2 that was actually filmed. Brad Pitt’s Plan B is producing the sequel, which filmed in London before moving to Vermont and Massachusetts.

Here’s the official synopsis: Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Michael Keaton is back as Beetlejuice and is joined in the cast by Winona Ryder, reprising the role of Lydia Deetz (now the host of a TV series called Ghost House with Lydia Deetz); Catherine O’Hara, back as Lydia’s stepmother Delia; Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, Justin Theroux as Lydia’s boyfriend Rory,  Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, and Willem Dafoe as a law enforcement officer in the afterlife. Arthur Conti is also in there, as a character named Jeremy Frazier.

The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice physical media release is expected have the following bonus features: Commentary by director Tim Burton – The Juice is Loose! The Making of Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceThe Ghost with the Most: Beetlejuice ReturnsMeet the DeetzHandbook for the Recently DeceasedShrinkers, Shrinkers Everywhere! An Animated Afterlife: The Stop-Motion Art of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice‘Til Death Do Us Park

Weekend Box Office: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice beats Transformers One in a surprise upset https://www.joblo.com/beetlejuice-beats-transformers/ https://www.joblo.com/beetlejuice-beats-transformers/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2024 16:45:27 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=796910 In a surprising twist, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice managed to hold on to the top spot at the weekend box office, with Transformers One underperforming.

Weekend Box Office

Industry estimates for the weekend had Paramount’s Transformers One, the critically acclaimed animated prequel, easily winning the weekend box office race with about $40 million. In our box office predictions, we were somewhat more conservative, expecting the animated pic to earn about $30 million. Yet, in a surprise twist of fate at the weekend box office, the film underperformed pretty drastically, allowing Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to win the box office crown for the third week in a row, with the hit sequel making $26 million compared to Transformers One’s $25 million.

So what happened? It could be that audiences have just grown weary of the Transformers franchise, which has been on a downslide at the box office since back in 2017 when Transformers: The Last Knight earned about half what the previous instalment, Age of Extinction, did domestically. Since then, none of the Transformers movies have performed all that well domestically, with the highest grosser being Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, with $157 million. Yet, the franchise is still strong overseas, particularly in China, which is why the studio is still making them.

Transformers One Beetlejuice

Transformers One was expected to reverse the downslide, being animated and sporting an all-star voice cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, and Scarlett Johansson. But, despite an amazing A CinemaScore rating, audiences just did not turn out to see the movie. The audience reaction could mean that the movie will be a word-of-mouth hit, but it faces steep competition next weekend from The Wild Robot, which earned raves out of TIFF.

All told, this is a fabulous result for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which now has a huge $225 million domestic total and should have no trouble passing about $270-ish, with a $300 million finish not out of the question. Blumhouse’s well-reviewed Speak No Evil fell a modest 49% to $5.8 million this weekend, which is good for a genre flick. It’s made just over $21 million so far and should end up with a $30 million-ish gross.

It managed to beat Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which continued the studio’s disastrous reign at the box office with a poor $4.5 million opening. At the end of the day, the movie’s hook just wasn’t enough to pull in a genre audience despite the presence of Halle Berry in the lead. The studio’s slate isn’t likely to get any better, with them also distributing Francis Ford Coppola’s critically maligned Megalopolis next weekend.

The Substance

Another horror flick, Mubi’s demented (and awesome) The Substance, underperformed this weekend, only making $3.1 million despite amazing reviews. It was beaten by Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which made $3.9 million for a smashing $627 million plus total. The controversial documentary Am I Racist?, earned $2.53 million, bringing its total to a decent $9 million (quite good for an independently distributed doc). At the same time, the biopic Reagan added another $1.7 million to its coffers for a $26.5 million total, with a potential $30 million finish in reach. Finally, the K-pop concert film Jung Kook: I Am Still made $1.42 million for a $2.57 million total, while Alien: Romulus started to close out its theatrical run with $1.32 million and a $103 million domestic total.

Next weekend sees the release of The Wild Robot. Will it be able to finally take down Beetlejuice Beetlejuice? Let us know in the comments!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, streaming

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been blowing up the box office, having already grossed over $264 million less than two weeks after its release. It’s a much-needed win for Warner Bros., which makes it all the more surprising that the studio had originally planned to give the Beetlejuice sequel a streaming release on Max.

It’s been a long road for the Beetlejuice sequel, and according to a New York Times report, Warner Bros. didn’t have a lot of faith that the project would be a success. They still wanted the film but were pushing for it to be released exclusively on the Max streaming service. Director Tim Burton wasn’t a big fan of that idea. “That was never going to work for Tim,” said studio co-chair Pamela Abdy. “You’re talking about visionary artist whose films demand to be seen on a big screen.

When Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca took over the studio, they wanted to repair the relationship with Burton, but the proposed budget (around $147 million) was still too much of a risk. In exchange for getting the budget under $100 million, they would guarantee a major theatrical release. This meant that Burton and the main stars (including Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O’Hara) would have to agree to work for less money upfront in exchange for a bigger piece of the back end. Now that the film has become such a big success, you would imagine those stars will be reaping the rewards. Of course, there’s always that famous Hollywood accounting to consider.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been praised as a return to form for Burton, with our own Chris Bumbray calling it the director’s “most energetic, playful, and creative film in years.” He continued, “Truth be told, I was wary of a Beetlejuice sequel, as I figured they should leave well enough alone after thirty-six years. But, once Danny Elfman’s score kicked in, and I got a look at returning production designer Bo Welch’s sets, I was all in on a sequel I had a total blast with. This one is a very pleasant surprise. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last time Burton says Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.” You can check out the rest of Bumbray’s review right here.

Here’s the official synopsis for Beetlejuice Beetljuice: “Beetlejuice is back! With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.” The sequel is now playing in theaters, so be sure to let us know what you think of the film!

Box office

The weekend box office numbers have begun rolling in, and it looks like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held up much better than anyone (except us) expected in week two. According to Deadline, the popular sequel grossed $51.6 million this weekend, which is the second-best sophomore weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017. Notably, the film only dipped 54% this weekend, a strong hold for a movie that opened north of $100 million.

With a $188 million domestic total, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems certain to end its domestic run with a $250 million-plus final gross. It is another winner for Warner Bros, who are having a good year. Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were all major worldwide hits, with only their underrated Furiosa and Horizon: Chapter 1 box office misfires for them this year. They also have Joker: Folie a Deux coming up in a few weeks, which should be another hit, even if the buzz has been muted after the movie was met with a surprisingly chilly reception from critics in Venice.

Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil opened within expectations, making $11.5 million, which isn’t that far off from what their movies Night Swim and Imaginary opened with earlier this year. This dark remake of the Danish horror film is targeted at an older audience, with its R-rating, and reviews have been largely positive (our own Tyler Nichols enjoyed it), so word of mouth should be good. Given that the studio is thrifty with their budgets, Speak No Evil should be a solid moneymaker for them.

The Killer's Game

However, the weekend’s other big new release, The Killer’s Game with Dave Bautista, is shaping up to be Lionsgate’s third massive flop in a row (following Borderlands and The Crow), only grossing $2.6 million (good enough for sixth place). Given how it was financed, The Killer’s Game isn’t even playing in Canada. It is likely destined for a streaming debut in a few months, similar to what happened with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Lucky for them, their horror flick, Never Let Go, opens next week and is getting solid buzz. Horror seems to be a good genre for them, with The Strangers: Chapter 1 also a moneymaker earlier this summer.

While Deadpool and Wolverine added $5.2 million to its coffers in third place (for a massive $621.5 million total), the rest of the top five was dominated by two specialty releases, the Matt Walsh documentary Am I Racist? and the biopic, Reagan, which has proven to be a sleeper hit. Am I Racist? is The Daily Wire’s first wide theatrical release, and the $4.75 million opening is pretty solid, although it’ll be interesting to see whether or not it’s front-loaded at the box office.

Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid as the 40th President of the United States, has proven to be surprisingly popular. While critics largely disliked it (it has a deadly 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences have turned this one into a pretty big sleeper hit, earning another $2.96 million this weekend towards a $23 million gross. While that may not sound like a huge number, this is big for a lower-key, grassroots release.

Alien

Meanwhile, Alien: Romulus crossed the magic $100 million mark at the domestic box office, making it only the second movie in the franchise (after Prometheus) to do so. That said, both Alien and Aliens, adjusted for inflation would easily surpass that number, having been major hits in their time. The Blake Lively romantic drama It Ends With Us has started wrapping up its run, making just over $2 million this weekend for an eighth-place finish and a $144 million domestic total. It was neck-and-neck with Sony’s faith-based, The Forge, which has earned $24.1 million so far. Another faith-based movie, God’s Not Dead: In Good We Trust, rounded out the top 10, making $1.46 million. Further down the list, A24’s The Front Room plummeted a whopping 73% at the box office, with only $427K in grosses over the weekend (according to Exhibitor Relations).

Do you think Lionsgate’s Never Let Go will finally break that studio’s losing streak at the box office? Let us know in the comments.

Beetlejuice 3

Tim Burton’s hit sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is on track for a pretty massive second weekend. While some expected the film to suffer a large drop-off in its second weekend, that seems not to be the case, with Deadline reporting that it should make about $50 million. That’s exactly what we predicted a few days ago, and to note it’s also the biggest second weekend for a fall movie since IT back in 2017.

Indeed, word of mouth seems good for this sequel (which we only had to wait thirty-six years for), and it’s making so much money that I wonder if Tim Burton’s going to stick to his claim that this is his last Beetlejuice movie. Even if it is, hopefully, he and Michael Keaton will re-team at some point, as clearly, these guys bring out something very special in each other.

Blumhouse’s well-reviewed horror flick Speak No Evil is also performing well, with it on track for a decent $12.5 million opening. Our own horror critic, Tyler Nichols, really enjoyed the film, and it seems to be one of Blumhouse’s better movies in recent memory. Between this and Split, they seem to have good luck when they pair with star James McAvoy.

The weekend’s other big new release, The Killer’s Game starring Dave Bautista will likely only make it to fifth place, with it performing poorly on Friday night. It should have a $2.5-4 million opening, which makes it the third straight box office flop in a row for Lionsgate. This one has a strange financing deal (similar to The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) which means it’s not even playing in theaters in Canada, which is obviously taking a bite out of the box office.

Deadpool & Wolverine should have no trouble coming in third, with the superhero smash making about $5 million this weekend. Fourth place might unexpectedly go to the Daily Wire-produced documentary, Am I Racist?, by Matt Walsh. It seems to be on track for a $4 million opening, although given that it’s more of a niche title, it could be front-loaded. We’ll report back tomorrow.

What are you seeing this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, box office

This weekend, Tim Burton’s smash hit sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will have to do battle with a handful of new releases – Speak No Evil and The Killer’s Game. Given the film’s $100 million-plus opening last week, none of these films will pose a significant threat to “The Ghost with the Most,” with it a no-brainer that it will once again dominate the box office.

The big question is, how front-loaded was the movie? Given that fans have been waiting thirty-six years for a sequel, one could argue that the people who were hellbent on seeing the movie all went on the first weekend, with the second weekend depending a bit more on word-of-mouth. Yet, the movie also has significant star power, with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder both riding renewed waves of success, with new star Jenna Ortega no doubt bringing in a hefty audience herself, with her Netflix show Wednesday one of the most popular on the streamer.

As such, I’m expecting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to make in the $50 million-ish range this weekend. There’s a good chance it could either over (or under) index, but I think the buzz around the movie is pretty good, with it also appealing to a decent-sized family contingent, who are underserved at the moment.

Universal’s well-reviewed horror flick, Speak No Evil should manage a second-place finish with about $12 million. This one seems a tad more sophisticated than their usual fare, with it a remake of a well-received Danish film. With James McAvoy in the lead, this might be a solid date movie for more discerning horror fans, although I don’t think it will have the crossover appeal of some of their more commercial outings.

Dave Bautista’s hitman movie, The Killer’s Game, isn’t expected to make much of an impact, with it playing by the League of Ungentlemanly Warfare playbook and not even opening in Canada. Given the limited number of screens, there’s no way this opens to more than $5 million, with it looking like a streaming movie at best. Deadpool and Wolverine should hit fourth place with about $4 million, while Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us should be in fifth place with about $2 million and chance.

Here are our predictions:

  1. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: $50 million
  2. Speak No Evil: $12 million
  3. The Killer’s Game: $5 million

After strong daily outings and major buzz, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice expectedly took the #1 spot this weekend, pulling in $110 million and marking not only the third-best opening weekend of the year but one of Tim Burton’s biggest box office openings ever, trailing only Alice in Wonderland. For the record, 1988’s Beetlejuice took in $8 million on its opening weekend. Even when adjusted for inflation, the sequel pulled in more than five times that over the course of just one weekend.

While that’s quite the earning for a 36-year-old sequel, movie theaters showcasing the film would attempt to profit extra from the film by offering auxiliary items. While this year saw movie-themed popcorn buckets go viral for their designs, AMC theaters, which offer alcoholic drinks for their age-appropriate audiences, attempted to sell a Beetlejuice Beetlejuice-themed drink called the Sandworm Slayer. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the drink is going viral, but for an unappealing reason — the regular-sized drink that comes in a disposable plastic cup is priced at $31.

Per THR, the concoction is a 24-ounce cocktail made with blue and black raspberry juice and “premium vodka.” And the “sandworm” aspect comes from the drink getting topped off with gummy worms. The drink went viral after a posting on social media from an attendee reported on his drink’s total. The post included the caption, “I bought the AMC BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE themed drink. It cost $31 dollars…” An annoyed commenter would humorously reply, “Naw Beetlejuice would’ve had to show up and bring me my drink for that price. You could have bought 6 shares of AMC Theatres stock with that $31, not sure which one would have been worth the price.”

This particular AMC location was revealed to have been in California. According to AMC’s internal research department, the regular price at 92% of AMC’s locations is $21 plus tax. This particular location would apparently include some unique liquor pricing laws, which would bump the pricing up to $28.25. AMC would claim that the drink “like so many of our movie-tie-in drinks, is wildly popular across the AMC circuit and sold very well during the weekend.”

box office

Even though summer is officially out of the way, the box office was still something to keep an eye on this weekend. Labor Day proved to have a pretty lackluster outing at the movies but as we near spooky season, we knew one movie would help bridge the gap between the beaches and the haunted houses.

Since we all pretty much knew that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would be the ghost with the most at the box office this weekend, it became a bit more fun trying to figure out how the rest of the top 10 would pad out. So, let’s take a look…

box office 2

The second-highest-grossing movie of the year, Deadpool & Wolverine, is still holding remarkably strong at the box office, with the MCU entry taking in an additional $7.2 million at the #2 spot, further securing it as the biggest money maker of any R-rated film, with over $1.27 billion worldwide so far. Coming in at #3 is a movie of a very different tone: biopic Reagan, which bumped up a spot from last week via another $5.2 million. Rounding out the top five this week were Alien: Romulus, which is crawling towards the $100 million domestic mark courtesy of another $3.9 million, and It Ends With Us, the Colleen Hoover adaptation which took in nearly as much this weekend and has done quite well despite some behind-the-scenes controversy.

The bottom half of the top 10 at the box office was led by The Forge, which made $2.9 million, just enough to beat Twisters, which has yet to fall from the top 10 even though it has been eight weeks. The only other movie to break the measly $2 million mark this week was Blink Twice, which made $2.1 million and came in at #8. Despicable Me 4 also held on, although its $1.8 million won’t do anything to get it near the $1 billion worldwide mark, which is officially out of reach. Coming in at #10 was A24’s The Front Room, which took in just $1.6 million on more than 2,000 screens, with audiences clearly disinterested in Brandy leading a horror movie in 2024 (although we will always dig her in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer).

box office 3

Next week will see a handful of new releases, including the American remake of Danish thriller Speak No Evil, the Dave Bautista-headed actioner The Killer’s Game, Sundance hit My Old Ass, and Kevin Smith’s The 4:30 Movie. These will probably have fairly calm outings at the box office as we await the noise of Transformers One, with the Demi Moore sensation The Substance and Clooney-Pitt pairing Wolfs also coming out on September 20th, although you can expect the latter to suffer because it heads to Apple TV+ the following week.

Did you catch anything at the cinema this weekend? Which movie did you help bump the box office numbers for?
