Smile 2

SATURDAY UPDATE: It looks like Smile 2 is going to open pretty much on par with the first film. Deadline is predicting that the horror sequel is going to gross somewhere around $22 million this weekend, which will bring it in just under the $22.6 million the original opened with. While only time will tell whether or not the sequel will have the legs the original did (it grossed over $200 million worldwide), the reviews for this are spot-on, and the opening is pretty much in line with our predictions.

Terrifier 3 is looking at about a 48% dip from the first weekend (good for a horror movie), but will likely get overtaken in second place by The Wild Robot, which is having great legs at the box office and should make $10.7 million this weekend, compared to Art the Clown’s $9.8 million. Further down the list, A24’s We Live in Time is overperforming, with a predicted $4 million weekend, and a predicted fifth place finish.

Check back tomorrow for our full box office report!

The people at Paramount will also be smiling ear-to-ear as the sequel to the 2022 horror film Smile keeps the scares going this October after Terrifier 3 topped last week’s box office top ten. Smile 2 blew away our own Chris Bumbray as he glowed in his review, Smile 2 dwarfed its predecessor, but it could rub people the wrong way with its heavy doses of pitch-black comedy. However, Finn also doesn’t skimp on the gore, with it being more gruesome than the original and having a big payoff, which is an all-timer for me as far as these things go. Indeed, I was shocked at how much I loved Smile 2. For me, it’s one of the more entertaining films I’ve seen this year, with the two-hour-plus running time racing by. It’s an all-out gore-soaked blast.”

Deadline is now reporting that audiences lined up for a good scare for the early Thursday preview of the Parker Finn horror movie, and Smile 2 would conjure up $2.5 million as it started its run at 5pm through 3,000 locations. This would best the first movie’s early preview by half a million, while the first would go on to make $22.6 million in its opening weekend and finish its theater life with $105.9 million. The ticket presales were also a good sign for this sequel and the buzz is pretty positive as it sits on a certified fresh 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while it waits for an audience score.

The Halloween-going crowd also had last week’s Terrifier 3 to give some good scares. The Thursday estimates indicate a slight drop with $1.5 million earned, which will bring its first week run to $26.9 million. The Terrifier movies made a splash with audiences due to the over-the-top violence and dark humor and many are saying that Terrifier 3 is the best in the series yet. The success of this new film is also priming audiences for an inevitable follow-up.

Meanwhile, not all of these October new releases are aiming to scare audiences, the Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh romantic drama We Live in Time from A24 expanded its release to 955 theaters. The film wouldn’t fair with the bigger releases and earned a humble $500k on Thursday.

PLOT: Tobias (Andrew Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) fall in love but have to grapple with a grim diagnosis that threatens their future.

REVIEW: One of the ironic things about TIFF is that, due to schedule quirks, you sometimes end up seeing movies that cover a lot of the same territory back to back. This happened to me this year with Nightbitch, and We Live In Time, with both films taking a look at 21st-century family life and the need to juggle family and career. Yet, while Nightbitch took a mostly unflinching look at the fact that relationships often become strained under the pressure, We Live In Time goes for an almost fairy tale-esque approach, with the impossibly beautiful couple at its heart having a picture-perfect life where both are fulfilled, in love and happy raising their cute child, who’s impeccably well mannered.

Not every film has to be Nightbitch though, and there’s something comforting in the idyll presented in John Crowley’s We Live In Time, which seems like it’s trying to be Love Story for 2024. To be sure, Garfield and Pugh are a gorgeous pair. The movie embraces a kind of fractured narrative that jumps back and forth in time, following their courtship, marriage, parenthood, and the eventual illness that threatens to rip the family apart.

It’s not giving anything away to note that Pugh’s Almut is the one who receives a potentially terminal diagnosis, with it given away near the start of the film. While many movies would be about the illness, We Live in Time instead devotes itself to chronicling the individual moments the two share. In a departure from the norm, Garfield’s Tobias is shown to be the one seeking marriage and commitment, with Pugh’s Almut more of a wandering sort, who works as a top chef in London and is unwilling to back-burner her career, no matter how much she loves Tobias.

It’s a good role for Pugh, who plays the type of part that would have once been reserved for the male half of the couple, with her shown to have more trouble compartmentalizing her life than her more nurturing spouse. For his part, Garfield turns up the charm, leaning into his puppy dog eyes and softer nature, although the movie is guilty of making Tobias too idealistic a character. At one time, female roles were criticized for the same thing, but here, the roles have been reversed in a way that feels somewhat pandering.

we live in time review

Whether or not you go for We Live in Time totally depends on how amiable you find the leads. I found it easy to invest in their story, but I must admit that I was disappointed in the fact that director John Crowley leaned into the slicker style he began using with his big arthouse hit, Brooklyn. While he had a misfire with The Goldfinch, We Live In Time still feels like a big studio effort and somewhat conventional for a movie being released by A24. The lavish lifestyle enjoyed by the leads here seems a little too idealized, making the movie feel a bit too much like a more polished (and better photographed) variation on the kind of fare you might find on Lifetime. Then again, a lot of folks might be yearning for that kind of escapism.

In some ways, this struck me as a bit of a letdown, as Crowley and Garfield once made one of the most affecting dramas I’ve ever seen – the shockingly underrated Boy A. I hoped for a bit of a return to that kind of raw, emotional storytelling, but We Live In Time too often felt like a romantic fantasy. Even still, the chemistry and performances of the two leads make it an ultimately ok tearjerker and date movie. But, one can’t help but feel that considering all the talent involved, it could have been more than what it is.

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in the romance film We Live in Time and the trailer was released earlier this year. One of the images released from the movie depicts a scene of Pugh and Garfield’s character on a carousel with the horse prominently placed in the image alongside them. However, the particular model of the horse on the ride sports a humorously over-the-top expression. The image went viral due to the horse’s clashing with the rest of the picture and people online have dubbed it “Demon Carousel Horse.”

We Live in Time

The Hollywood Reporter has reported on the film’s star Andrew Garfield as he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote We Live in Time. Garfield explained, “I see this image, and I think, ‘Maybe I’m the only one that will notice this insane horse.’ It feels like we’re in his poster, in a way. ‘No, I’m probably being overly sensitive. No one else will see it.’” Garfield said he saw the image online just before he attended a six-day retreat in Northern California, during which he would not have his phone. He mentions that he saw the slew of viral images once he returned from the retreat, “I see all the memes, which are just, I was crying with laughter in the departure lounge. So I guess other people noticed it.”

Garfield would jokingly give Colbert a shirt with the image of the horse on it, and he joked about making a three-part documentary series “to get to the bottom of, like, where the oversight fell apart and why this horse has taken on a life of its own.”

In the trailer, we see Pugh’s Almut and Garfield’s Tobias have a unique meet cute, with her hitting him with her Mini Cooper, leaving him hospitalized with multiple broken bones and contusions. When she arrives to apologize, he immediately turns on the charm, and soon, the two are madly in love, with them having a child and juggling their careers, with her a chef on the rise. But, as the trailer teases (in tear-jerking fashion), when Almut receives an ominous diagnosis, time may not be on their side, leaving both to make the most of the time they have left.

Yelena Belova and Spider-Man will come together in a new film, but it’s not what you think. After presenting at the 95th Academy Awards together, Florence Pugh (Black WidowMidsommar) and Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way HomeHacksaw Ridge) are in talks to star in We Live In Time, a unique love story directed by John Crowley (BrooklynBoy A). Crowley directs from a screenplay by Nick Payne (WanderlustThe Last Letter from Your Lover), with StudioCanal developing the script and producing with SunnyMarch.

According to Deadline, the plot remains a mystery. However, the outlet describes it as a “funny, deeply moving and immersive love story.” If Pugh and Garfield sign on, cameras will roll later this year.

Pugh and Garfield were a highlight of Sunday’s Oscars celebration, with both stars looking glamorous and in good spirits. Who knew their pairing was a sign of things to come?

Later this month, Pugh will star alongside Morgan Freeman in Zach Braff’s latest drama, A Good Person. In the film, Pugh plays Allison, a young woman whose life is changed forever after a terrible accident. While trying to piece her life back together, she connects with another victim of her fatal mistake and must learn to make amends if they’re both to move on from the tragedy. Pugh is also a part of the ensemble cast for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which tells the story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in developing the atomic bomb. Nolan directs, with Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Jack Quaid, Gary Oldman, Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh, David Dastmalchian, Alex Wolff, Rami Malek, Gustaf Skarsgård, Casey Affleck, and more set to star.

You can catch Garfield in Hulu’s TV mini-series Under the Banner of Heaven, based on the nonfiction novel of the same name by Jon Krakauer. Garfield plays Detective Jeb Pyre, a Latter-day Saint detective for the East Rockwell, Utah police department. Gilm Birmingham plays Detective Bill Taba, a Paiute man and non-Latter-day Saint, another detective. Together, the duo investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to Mormonism.

Are you excited for Pugh and Garfield to join forces for We Live In Time? We’ll monitor the project and report back when we learn more.
