The wait is finally over. The day after Paramount and Sega teased fans with projections of characters onto buildings, declaring that the trailer was heading our way, the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer has made its way online. The mood for this installment is more ominous as a new mysterious threat is unleashed on our world and is revealed to have origins that mirror Sonic’s.

The official synopsis from Paramount reads,
“Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”

Jeff Fowler returns to direct Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on a story by Casey and Miller. Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, with Idris Elba (Knuckles), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), James Marsden (Tom Wachowski), Tika Sumpter (Maddie Wachowski), Tom Butler (Commander Walters), Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone), and Jim Carrey (Dr. Robotnik). Newcomers to the fast-paced and family-friendly franchise include Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, Krysten Ritter as Captain Rockwell, and Alyla Browne as Maria.

Executive producers on this new entry include Haruki Satomi, Shuji Utsumi, Yukio Sugino, Jeff Fowler, Tommy Gormley and Tim Miller. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno are on board as the producers of this sequel.

With the recent Knuckles spin-off series and this new installment introducing Shadow, Sonic producer Toby Ascher has a vision that the property can grow to become “Avengers-level.”  Ascher states, “We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies. We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events. They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters.”

Buckle your boots and save your appetite for a celebratory chili dog because Paramount‘s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer races online tomorrow! The studio is pulling out all the stops to promote the Blue Blur’s next live-action animated adventure with projections emblazed on iconic locations worldwide. On Sunday evening, citizens in Sydney, New York City, Tokyo, and Seattle spotted Sonic, Shadow, and Dr. Robotnik on buildings in major cities. The massive projections display images of Sonic’s face, a mean-muggin’ Shadow, and a smiling Eggman.

While waiting to experience Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, why not watch Knuckles, the six-episode series on Paramount+? The series takes place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and “follows Knuckles (Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.”

Excitement for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer is off the charts! Somehow, Sonic has maintained a devoted fanbase for decades, with fans gobbling up every video game, animated series, and comic book dedicated to the lightning-fast wish-cracker. The franchise is rich with beloved characters we’ve yet to see in Paramount’s live-action films, including Amy Rose, Rouge the Bat, Big the Cat, Cream the Rabbit, Blaze the Cat, Espio the Chameleon, and many more. I assume they’re saving characters like Amy Rose, Rouge, and Big the Cat for other franchise installments, but I’m shocked Amy Rose isn’t already a part of the mix.

Are you excited about Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer? Which character do you hope is introduced or teased in the next chapter of the series? Let us know in the comments section below.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 races into theaters on December 20.

Paramount Pictures is going full steam with its Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise by attaching some of Hollywood’s hottest stars to voice iconic characters from the expanding SEGA series. It broke the internet when Idris Elba said he was voicing Knuckles the Echidna for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I could hear the rapturous screams from my office in Canada as fans of the Blue Blur rejoiced. Now, Paramount is rekindling the fire by bringing Keanu Reeves into the fold as Shadow the Hedgehog for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Speaking about Reeves joining the cast, Idris Elba believes it was his destiny to work alongside the John Wick actor, and he couldn’t be happier about his good fortune.

“I’m a big fan of his,” Elba said about Keanu Reeves in an interview with IGN. “I’ve heard that he’s a fan of mine, and we are destined to make something together. So, here we go.”

It’s worth noting this isn’t the first time Elba and Reeves have collaborated on a shared project. They voice characters in Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED’s action role-playing game, with Reeves voicing Johnny Silverhand and Elba as Solomon Reed from the Phantom Liberty expansion.

James Marsden reprises his role as Tom Wachowski in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the sheriff of Green Hills. Other returning cast members include Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower, Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna, Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski, Tom Butler as Commander Walters, Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, and, of course, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. New members of the cast include Krysten Ritter, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone, as well as Alyla Browne, who is said to be playing Maria.

Before we get to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the next franchise installment will be Knuckles, a six-episode series set to premiere on Paramount+. The series takes place between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and “follows Knuckles (Elba) on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.” Knuckles will debut this week on April 26th, followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on December 20th.

Alex Maidy’s review for Knuckles went live on JoBlo this morning, saying the series “quickly devolves into an unnecessarily convoluted story about a character most people do not even remember who happens to hang out with Knuckles.” While that sounds like a drag, Knuckles isn’t without charm.

Are you excited about Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow the Hedgehog? Should Paramount build an Avengers-esque Sonic the Hedgehog universe? Let us know in the comments section below.

Knuckles review

PLOT: The new live-action event series follows Knuckles on a hilarious and action-packed journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.

REVIEW: It is hard to believe that Sonic The Hedgehog premiered on the big screen just before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world. What is even harder to believe is that the movie was actually pretty good. With a sequel released two years later and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 slated for December 2024, the world is chock full of SEGA goodness these days. To bridge the wait until the end of this year, the six-episode limited series Knuckles highlights the Idris Elba-voiced echidna warrior’s journey to find his place in our world. Featuring limited connections to the movies, Knuckles has its moments but overall feels like an attempt to tread water until the third film comes out thanks to an inconsequential plot and surprisingly limited screentime for the titular character. More of a showcase for Adam Pally, reprising his minor role from the first two movies, Knuckles is going to draw in a large audience of kids excited to see the animated heroes but who will be underwhelmed by how little they appear on screen.

Of the six episodes of Knuckles, the first episode is by far the best. Directed by Sonic the Hedgehog helmer Jeff Fowler, the opening episode is the sole entry that features Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Maddie (Tika Sumpter). After the events of the second film, Knuckles is still struggling to find his place on Earth, specifically within the confines of Green Hills, Montana. While Tom Wachowski is out of town, Knuckles (Idris Elba) causes chaos around the house and must find a place for himself, thanks to the spiritual guidance of his fellow echidna, Pachamac (Christopher Lloyd). Knuckles decides that his mission is to help Deputy Wade Whipple (Adam Pally) on his journey to win a bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada. You read that right: Knuckles is a video game-themed twist on the Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid-led film Kingpin. Almost immediately after leaving Green Hills, Knuckles shows up on the radar of two G.U.N. agents, Mason (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi) and Willoughby (Ted Lasso‘s Ellie Taylor) who work for one of Doctor Robotnik’s former employees who calls himself The Buyer (Game of Thrones‘ Rory McCann). The Buyer, like Robotnik, wants to harness the extraterrestrial power of Knuckles’ quills and has created some gadgets for Mason and Whilloughby to use.

If that were the core plot of Knuckles, it would probably be a pretty decent series. The first episode boasts solid action between Knuckles and the two G.U.N. (Guardian Unit of Nations) agents; the next five episodes are very hit-and-miss. Many of the series follow a road trip format, with the direct showdowns between the hero and the villain taking a backseat to Wade’s personal journey. This includes a side trip to Wade’s childhood home where he and Knuckles celebrate the Jewish sabbath with Wade’s mother, Wendy (Stockard Channing), and his FBI agent sister, Wanda (Edi Patterson). Knuckles comes to appreciate the Jewish customs, and Idris Elba continues to do great work as the stoic warrior, but each episode seems to use Knuckles as a plot device to tell Wade’s story. We get a little background on Knuckles aside from his spiritual messages with Pachamac and a couple of well-placed action sequences in the first, third, and final episodes. There are long stretches across the series that do not even have Knuckles in them as Adam Pally takes center stage as the goofy Wade. Pally is a good comedic actor, but his arc just does not seem worth devoting three hours of screen time when audiences want to see Knuckles kicking ass and beating up bad guys.

knuckles, idris elba

The supporting cast here is better than it has any right to be, but everyone seems to be appearing in different series. The first episode is the most similar to the Sonic movies, while subsequent episodes are all over the place. Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh) plays Wade’s friend, Jack Sinclair, an overly dramatic bounty hunter. Scott Mescudi barely registers as Mason, while Ellie Taylor is oddly sexy as the severe-haircut-wielding Willoughby. Rory McCann appears in just a couple of scenes and not nearly enough to justify his character as a villain, while Cary Elwes does his best as the Bill Murray-surrogate villain bowler, Pistol Pete. Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel appear as the commentators for the bowling tournament in a nod to Jason Bateman and Gary Cole in Dodgeball, but their appearance will go over the heads of younger viewers. Every person in the cast is funny and plays their roles well, but they all feel like they were cast and then picked their roles out of a hat to populate this series.

The series, created by John Whittington, boasts scripts by Whittington, Brian Schacter, and James Madejski. Directing duties fall to Sonic the Hedgehog helmer Jeff Fowler on the premiere, with Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker on the remaining five. The production values are limited to a couple of action set pieces, one inside Wade’s childhood home and the other on the streets of Reno, Nevada. Most of the rest of the series relies on interiors or green screen exteriors. The animation quality of Knuckles is as good as the movie, but his limited time on the screen should tell you how much budget was allotted for this show. Only Idris Elba is consistent and good in this series, with everyone else feeling more like a cartoon than the animated character does. If this had been compressed into a feature film that gave us more of what we get in the first and last episodes, Knuckles would have worked better for me.

The six episodes of Knuckles each clock in right around thirty minutes each which means we mercifully do not need to spend an inordinate amount of time with this series, but it still feels overlong and does not have enough Knuckles in it. I started having a blast with the series, but as each episode progressed, I became less and less enthusiastic about it. What starts out as a solid spin-off from Sonic the Hedgehog quickly devolves into an unnecessarily convoluted story about a character most people do not even remember who happens to hang out with Knuckles. If this had been an origin story or had featured more of Idris Elba, I likely would have enjoyed it more. As it stands, Knuckles is a short batch of six episodes that still feels about an hour-and-a-half too long. There is not enough action or development related to the title character with an uneven focus on secondary characters. Kids will be disappointed, and adults will be bored. It is a shame because I laughed at multiple moments that will stick with me that did not overcome the lackluster project as a whole.

Knuckles premieres on April 26th on Paramount+.

We’ve known that Shadow the Hedgehog would be appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for some time but didn’t know who would be voicing the character… until now. First reported by John Campea and confirmed by THR, Shadow the Hedgehog will be voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.

The audience at CinemaCon got a glimpse of Shadow during Paramount’s panel, during which a first-look trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was screened. The character first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 as a dark version of Sonic who does whatever it takes to achieve his goals. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has included some unexpected voice actors, such as Idris Elba as Knuckles, so it should be fun to see what Keanu Reeves does with Shadow.

Robotnik. As for Keanu Reeves, he will reprise his role as John Wick for Ballerina, the upcoming spin-off movie starring Ana de Armas. The spin-off, which is officially titled John Wick Presents: Ballerina, will hit theaters on June 6, 2025.

When early Marvel Studios movies planted their seeds that implied a possible crossover of their films, they came off as fun little easter eggs for the hardcore fans at first. Then, when The Avengers came out in 2012 with its game-changing crossover, the film world saw what they were capable of and studios rushed behind them in line to try to get some of that shared universe glory. A producer on the successful Sonic the Hedgehog movies thinks the video game-inspired franchise has the characters and the lore to build what he hopes will be “Avengers-level” event films.

According to IGN, franchise and series executive producer Toby Ascher recently gave an interview with Paste Magazine where he spoke about Paramount’s plan to build upon the Sonic the Hedgehog movies into a mega event. The studio already has the Knuckles spin-off coming out as a way to look at “supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.” The sequel feature films are aiming to feature a wide array of characters and sport an epic story of sorts. Ascher states, “We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies. We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events. They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 inevitably featured Sonic’s partner, Tails, in a major role and also introduced Knuckles. With the third movie, another big character from the Sega games is making his way onto the big screen — Shadow the Hedgehog. According to IGN, “One character fans have begged for since the live-action movies began is Metal Sonic, and with dozens of other games, shows, and even comics to pull from, there’s no telling how Paramount will proceed.” However, the real litmus test before Sonic 3 will be how the Knuckles spin-off captures audiences. When the character entered the film world, Ascher says, “We thought we could translate that into a full series. I think it’s by far the funniest version we’ve had in any of the Sonic movies so far. It leans into weird comedy partially because of Adam Pally and because of what Idris brings in a really great way.”

After racing toward the finish line at top speed, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler is wrapping up production on the Blue Blur’s latest adventure! Fowler announced the film’s production wrap via Twitter/X with a new photo from the set. In the image, Fowler holds a giant clapper with drawings of the threequel’s primary animated cast, including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow. The latest addition to the cast, Shadow, takes the spotlight on the clapper, while Tails and Knuckles give the anti-hero the stink eye. Meanwhile, Sonic appears unbothered by Shadow’s presence, shrugging off the new player’s prominence. If you look past the clapper, you’ll find Fowler wearing a shirt saying “Keep Calm and Jim Carrey On,” a nod to the comedic actor’s franchise return as Dr. Robotnik.

Earlier this monthSonic the Hedgehog 3 star James Marsden confirmed that filming for the highly-anticipated sequel concluded, saying, “Yeah, we just wrapped, actually!” Marsden told The Playlist. “I feel really proud of what we created, and the response from the fans, we just had to get the animation right on that first movie, but great family, all positive. Jim’s just having a ball, he’s in his inspiration zone… So it’s a joy to watch him have a good time, like really enjoying it again. It’s great, very lucky to be a part of it, and I think fans are gonna be excited about all the new characters.”

Marsden also happened to mention that the production was near the same stages where Deadpool & Wolverine was shooting, which prompted a reaction from the interviewer. Paramount Pictures didn’t have a bad 2023 but had put a lot of hopes on the latest in the Mission: Impossible franchise to push them towards a great year. After Tom Cruise soared with Top Gun: Maverick, they had hoped fans would flock to theaters once again to see him in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One. Off that’s a long title. It underperformed, so the next film will get a new name. What can fans look forward to on Paramount’s 2024 release schedule?

Bob Marley One Love

Bob Marley: One Love – Now Playing

A new music biopic, which has been a trend that has proved profitable over the last few decades. This one is with the cooperation of the Marley family. I’m curious to see if the film will show anything that might put the singer in a bad light. The biggest problem with these types of films is that they try to paint the subject in the best light possible. They might acknowledge the problems that followed them, but it’s usually to show them overcome them. Either way, it should be an interesting insight into the legendary musician. Read our review!

IF, trailer, John Krasinski

If – May 17th

John Krasinski has been getting a lot of praise over the last few years. With his work on the Quiet Place franchise, he seems to have earned quite a place for himself as a filmmaker. This children’s movie is labeled as “From The Imagination Of John Krasinski” as a selling point. Seems like a lot to put on the faith of one guy who was in The Office. It also has Ryan Reynolds, and that guy seems to print money, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. I was hoping for more of a take on imaginary friends along the lines of Drop Dead Fred, but this looks more targeted towards younger kids. It would be nice if Fred at least got a name-drop.

A Quiet Place: Day One

A Quiet Place: Day One – June 28th

This is labelled as a spin-off of the popular franchise focusing on the initial invasion of the alien antagonists we know (and fear) from this franchise. Lupita Nyong’o stars opposite newly minted Fantastic Four star Joseph Quinn. So far, we don’t really know exactly what the whole premise is, but it looks to be just as good as the other films, even if it has a new director in Pig‘s Michael Sarnoski. This is perhaps the biggest release on Paramount’s 2024 release schedule.

Transformers One animated movie voice cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Keegan-Michael Key, and more

Transformers One – September 13th

An animated prequel to the popular film franchise will be set on Cybertron. It is said it will focus on the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron. The cast is stacked with A-List power from Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburn, and Chris Hemsworth. The latter of which will replace all-time best Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen in the role. We’ll have to see if that’s a good choice or not. Are we tired of Transformers movies? It seems like the popularity keeps going down, but Paramount seems intent on keeping them going.

Smile 2, release date

Smile 2 – October 18th

This film has for sure been rushed into development after the first film was a surprise smash. It was initially supposed to go straight to streaming, but it was given a theatrical run after test screenings went very positively. The response from audiences made it number 1 at the box office. Last year was great for the horror genre, and this film definitely helped. It’s no surprise that this film was pushed forward to quickly capitalize. Will it be a great follow-up to the original, or are they making a mistake? With their interesting marketing campaign of sending people out to sporting events to sit in the front row and look directly into the camera, I can only hope to see something fun starting with the Super Bowl.

denzel washington, ridley scott, gladiator

Gladiator 2 – November 22nd

When this was announced, it seemed like a strange idea. The main character died (SPOILER!) at the end of the first film. How can we continue this story without Russell Crowe’s award-winning performance? Well, according to the very limited details we know about the film, you have it follow Lucius. He is the son of Maximus’ love Lucilla. Okay. Even if that doesn’t lead some fans into the theater, the cast is loaded with some great performers who should put on some interesting performances. Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal are the two biggest names, along with Connie Nielson reprising her character from the original. With Ridley Scott back at the helm, it should at least be worth checking out.+

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 – December 20th

Mario may have finally gotten a decent film in 2023, but Sonic has been doing a pretty good job since 2020. After some retooling of the graphics, that is. An early trailer nearly destroyed any chance this franchise had, but the studio listened to fans. With the recent news that Jim Carrey is returning as Dr. Robotnik for this outing, fans have to be excited. Now that Sonic is a full-fledged movie star, when are we going to end up getting a full-on Super Smash Bros. movie? Do it!

Not long after hunting a monstrously-sized spider in Kiah Roache-Turner’s upcoming horror thriller Sting, Alyla Browne is hanging out with Sonic the Hedgehog and his fast-moving friends. The up-and-coming actress revealed she’s playing Maria Robotnik for Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3. According to Sonic the Hedgehog lore, Maria Robotnik is Professor Gerald Robotnik’s granddaughter and Doctor Robotnik’s cousin.

While there’s a chance Browne is playing a different character named Maria, I’ll bet my collection of original Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Genesis cartridges she’s the character who debuted in Sonic Adventure 2. On social media, Browne posted a picture of herself wearing a puffy bodybag-looking jacket while sitting in an actor’s chair from the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set. The chair has the name Maria written on it, with Brown giving two playful peace signs to her fans. The jacket covers her head to toe, obscuring her character’s look.

A trailer for Alyla Browne’s new horror film, Sting, is busy giving arachnophobes nightmares, as the film features a massive spider wreaking havoc in an apartment building. Browne leads the film as Charlotte (I see what you did there; I like the cut of your jib, Kiah), a young girl whose pet spider grows to a supernatural size, killing anything in its path. Sting looks like lots of fun, with Charlotte brandishing a high-velocity Super Soaker filled with God knows what at the end of the trailer. My body is ready.

Jeff Fowler (Sonic the HedgehogGopher Broke) directs Sonic 3 from a script by Pat Casey (Violent NightSonic the Hedgehog 2) and Josh Miller (12 Deadly DaysViolent Night). Repring their roles from previous Sonic films are Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski. Missing from IMDB’s Sonic 3 cast list is Tika Sumpter, who plays Maddie in the first two films. While Sumpter might not appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, she returns for Knuckles, the Sonic spin-off coming to Paramount+ and starring Idris Elba as the attitudinal echidna.

Are you excited about Maria Robotnik appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3? Will she play a more significant part in the film than in Sonic Adventures 2? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
