The Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of Blade has had a long, rough ride through the development process, and as of right now it doesn’t even have a director attached (Jeymes Samuel, a.k.a. The Bullitts, who previously directed the Netflix Western The Harder They Fall and the Biblical dramedy The Book of Clarence, was recently rumored for the job, but he said there was no truth to the rumor). So there probably weren’t many Marvel fans who were expecting the movie to stick with its November 7, 2025 release date – and therefore, few will be surprised or disappointed to hear that Blade has indeed been bumped out of 2025. Deadline reports that Disney will be releasing 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands on November 7, 2025 instead of Marvel’s vampire slayer movie.

The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’ve passed the five year anniversary of that announcement, and there’s still no sign that Blade will be filming any time soon. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. We recently heard a rumor that Ali is getting “increasingly frustrated” with the long development process on this one. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre have been cast alongside Ali as the years have gone by, but are no longer involved, as their characters have apparently been written out. Co-star Mia Goth, who is rumored to be playing the villainous Lilith, is still attached – and she has said that she’s fine with the delays, because it shows that Marvel really cares about the project. Two directors, Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, have dropped out along the way.

As for Predator: Badlands, this one is coming our way from Prey director Dan Trachtenberg, making him the first filmmaker to take the helm of two films in the Predator franchise. Trachtenberg crafted the story, which was then fleshed out into a screenplay by Prey screenwriter Patrick Aison.

According to a casting call, Predator: Badlands has the following synopsis: A groundbreaking film in which one of the two main storylines delves into the intricate bond of two very different sisters, their familial ties are put to the ultimate test as they pursue divergent paths and missions. We’ve previously heard that the story is set sometime in the future.

The casting call was searching for a lead actress who could take on the dual role of twin sisters Thia and Tessa: This casting is for a dual character, and describes both characters. Character identifies as female or non-binary, open ethnicity, mid 20s – mid 40s. Thia has spent most of her life in a laboratory and is now embarking on her first big adventure in the world. She is incredibly smart, witty, enthusiastic, and unflappable. She has an innate disregard for danger, not because she’s fearless, but simply because she’s naive. Strong comedy chops required. // The other sister, Tessa, has a militant intensity when it comes to achieving her family’s goals and mission objectives. She will not let anything get in her way, not even her twin sister.

Super 8‘s Elle Fanning stars in the film, which went into production in New Zealand earlier this year.

While taking Blade off of their schedule, Disney revealed that they have scheduled three untitled Marvel movies for release on February 18, 2028; May 5, 2028; and November 10, 2028.

Predator Elle Fanning

Back in February, it was announced that Prey director Dan Trachtenberg would become the first filmmaker to take the helm of two films in the Predator franchise, as he was moving ahead with a new Predator film titled Badlands, working from a screenplay by Prey screenwriter Patrick Aison (based on a story crafted by Trachtenberg himself), with filming expected to begin this summer. In June, it was revealed that Super 8‘s Elle Fanning had been cast in the film. Now, the folks at AVPGalaxy have learned that Badlands is currently in production in New Zealand, filming under the codename Backpack, and they’ve gotten their hands on a casting call that reveals some details about the project!

According to this casting call, Predator: Badlands has the following synopsis: A groundbreaking film in which one of the two main storylines delves into the intricate bond of two very different sisters, their familial ties are put to the ultimate test as they pursue divergent paths and missions.

The casting call notes that filming would be taking place in New Zealand from late June through September. As for the physical requirements of the actress, “Must be comfortable training for heavy action/combat, must also be comfortable wearing prosthetics/heavy makeup, and MUST be 5’8” or shorter.” It seems likely that Elle Fanning has been cast as Thia and Tessa, even though she’s not 5’8″ or shorter. Fanning is reportedly 5’9″. Close enough?

AVPGalaxy has heard that Badlands has been filming in Rotorua and Te Kuiti, and will be heading to South Head next.

Elle Fanning (The Great, The Neon Demon, Super 8) could be trading her bustle for survival gear after being in talks to join the cast of Dan Trachtenberg’s standalone Predator film Badlands. Deadline says Fanning is negotiating for the role in the highly anticipated film, which Trachtenberg is directing and co-writing with Patrick Aison.

Anticipation for Trachtenberg’s Prey follow-up is through the roof. Prey was a surprise smash hit of 2022, with Trachtenberg and star Amber Midthunder arguably delivering the best Predator movie since the 1987 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Plot details for Badlands remain a mystery, as do the film’s release plans. Prey premiered exclusively on Hulu to record numbers during the pandemic. However, 20th Century Studios is going hard in the paint with its extraterrestrial action flicks and the upcoming Alien: Romulus coming to theaters. It would not be surprising to see Badlands debuting on the silver screen alongside the Xenomorph threat.

In addition to Elle Fanning possibly joining the cast of Badlands, a new Alien game called Alien Rogue Incursion was previewed at Sony Playstation’s latest State of Play presentation. The single-player action game launches during the 2024 Holiday window on Steram, the PlayStation VR2, and Meta Quest 3. The VR-based first-person shooter finds players hunted by a vicious Xenomorph in a claustrophobic environment on Purdan. Players use pulse rifles and other iconic weapons to survive the onslaught, with Xenomorphs spawning in the shadows, looking to make a meal out of anyone dumb enough to stand in their way.

Speaking of video games, Elle Fanning stars in Hideo Kojima’s upcoming sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. She joins Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker, Shioli Kutsuna, Jonathan Roumie, Kevin Ko, Krishna Kumar, Marty Rhone, and Joseph Anthony DePronio II for the anticipated, narratively-baffling follow-up to the 2019 original.

Meanwhile, Elle Fanning is currently filming Going Electric for director James Mangold. The story revolves around the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, where a young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation.

Are you excited about Elle Fanning joining the cast of Dan Trachtenberg’s Badlands? Let us know in the comments section below.

After reinvigorating the Predator franchise with 2022’s crowd-pleasing Prey, filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg is getting back behind the camera for a new Predator film titled Badlands. The project is not a sequel to Prey but is said to take place in the future. Badlands will feature a female lead, with Trachtenberg penning the story while Patrick Aison writes the screenplay.

Trachtenberg is going into lockdown mode for Badlands, meaning he’ll keep details about the film under lock and key. Reports say development for Badlands is already underway, with July targeted as the project’s production start date.

Following the success of Prey, which many hail as the second-best film in the Predator franchise (or the best, depending on who you talk to), Trachtenberg commented on hopes for a sequel, saying, “I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations. The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next. And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward.”

Adding to the discussion, Trachtenberg says he never approached Prey like a movie destined to debut on the Hulu streaming service: “I was in denial about that, that it was for streaming. I don’t even know that I would think it’s for streaming anyway and shoot that, the studio was in denial. No one was thinking, ‘Oh, let’s make a concession for streaming.’ Maybe there may have been, I don’t know. But even when I’ve done commercials that I know and people say, ‘Oh, it’s people looking on their iPhone.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, we watched movies on our iPhone that were shot, we have to treat it all as if it was the best version of itself.’”

What do you think about Dan Trachtenberg returning to the Predator franchise for another hunt? Where and when could the story take place? Did 2022’s Prey rekindle your love of the wicked alien warrior? We’ll bring you more details as soon as we hear more about Dan Trachtenberg’s Badlands.

2023 happens to be the 15th anniversary of the release of the creature feature Cloverfield (watch it HERE), which was directed by Matt Reeves and spawned an anthology franchise, being followed by Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and Julius Onah’s The Cloverfield Paradox. Last year, Under the Shadow‘s Babak Anvari signed on to direct a new Cloverfield sequel from a screenplay by iBoy writer Joe Barton. The only information we’ve really learned about this new Cloverfield sequel is that, unlike the original film, it won’t be presented in the found footage style. But during an interview with CinemaBlend, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg revealed that the film is setting aside the anthology approach to be a direct sequel to the original film. He also said that it’s going to be “very cool”.

CinemaBlend was actually hoping Trachtenberg would tell them a direct follow-up to 10 Cloverfield Lane had been discussed. But when he was asked if there had been any talk of such a sequel, he said, “Not really. The sequel is to the original Cloverfield. But for our film, I would still totally be open to it. I think (10 Cloverfield Lane star Mary Elizabeth Winstead) would. … We talked a little bit in like ‘what if’ scenarios. And then I was pulled, all the filmmakers were sort of pulled into other things. But I would still consider it. There’s a lot that would be in the genre that that would be in, but you never know. The sequel they’re making is very cool.

Of course, he didn’t say why it’s going to be very cool.

Directed by Reeves from a screenplay by Drew Goddard and produced by J.J. Abrams (who has produced the sequels as well), the original Cloverfield has the following synopsis: As a group of New Yorkers enjoy a going-away party, little do they know that they will soon face the most terrifying night of their lives. A creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive as New York crumbles around them.

That one starred Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, and Odette Yustman.

Are you glad to hear the new Cloverfield sequel is a very cool follow-up to the original film? Share your thoughts on this franchise by leaving a comment below.

Christopher Owen

Christopger is 32 years old from Glasgow, Scotland. He has a wonderful wife Natalie and a son Max who he loves very, very much. Art is really important to him too and doesn’t know what his geeky brain would do without having that outlet! If Christopher obsesses over something, he has to draw it.

JoBlo: What got you started as an artist?
Owen: I loved drawing from such a really young age. I’d draw little comic strips and imaginary battle scenes based on Star Wars or Jurassic Park. Pretty much all the same stuff that excited me then still excites me now. It was an escape. My home life suffered from a lot of turmoil. I suffered abuse from a family member and that made me a really insular person. Drawing was an escape from that. There’s no shame in it and I’m proud to have the artistic ability I have today. I have such a supportive and loving family now, mainly my wife and son, and it’s turned my artwork not into an escape but an expression of gratitude and a celebration of everything that I hold dear.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
I’m sure it’s the same for alot of artists who love cinema but Drew Struzan was the first artist who made a huge impact on me. It was in the Showcase Cinema in Glasgow, my hometown, where I first saw the posters for the Star Wars special editions in 1997 and I told myself I want to draw like that! John Alvin to a similar degree. I also love the art of Salvador Dali and Peter Howson.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
I love Sam Gilbey and Nuno Sardanas. They’re also poster artists and they really inspire me with their creativity. Rachel Jane Art is my friend too and she has a really amazing painterly style that I’m in awe of. I do follow a lot of artists. I do try and keep my social media a really positive and inspiring place.

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
I think it’s just important to be yourself and follow your own path. Draw inspiration from where you can find it and have fun. Every artist started because it was a fun bit of escapism. Never lose that.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
More of just being me. I hope to continue getting better at the craft and learning new techniques. I don’t want to ever reach a point where I feel like I can’t improve or do better. I want a constant evolution.

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
There’s a lot I could list but it really boils down to Star Wars and Jurassic Park. I love both of those worlds. I’ll want to hold a real lightsaber or see a real dinosaur until the day I die.

A few months ago, it was announced that 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey director Dan Trachtenberg will be directing an episode of Stranger Things season 5 – which also happens to be the final season of the hugely popular Netflix streaming series. That season was supposed to be deep into production by now, but has been delayed several months due to the writers and actors strikes. The writers strike recently ended, now we just need the actors strike to come to an end so Stranger Things can get rolling. While waiting for his chance to report to the Stranger Things set, Trachtenberg has been doing the press rounds to promote the physical media release of his Predator movie Prey… and during a conversation with Collider, he talked about signing on to bring an episode of Stranger Things to the screen and working with the show’s creators The Duffer Brothers.

Trachtenberg told Collider, “I was prepping (the episode) before the strike and doing previews for sequences and stuff. It’s awesome! I’m doing it because I love that show so much. I think every season has gotten better and better and better, and this is the final one, and the Duffers are geniuses and good, really good dudes. And this episode, that’s just ‘an episode’ of Season 5, has several awesome set pieces in it and it’s gonna be huge, man. It’s a big season, and, so far, so cool. … Me and the Duffers have very similar sensibilities, raised around the same time and on the same movies, and this is genre stuff that I haven’t totally gotten to play in yet and I don’t know if I would, so, I’m glad I can just grab on. I want to ride, too!

Stranger Things season 4 had the following synopsis: It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Here’s the list of that season’s cast members and the characters they played: Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers), David Harbour (Jim Hopper), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Noah Schnapp (Will Byers), Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), Maya Hawke (Robin Buckley), Priah Ferguson (Erica Sinclair), Brett Gelman (Murray), Cara Buono (Karen Wheeler), Matthew Modine (Dr. Brenner), Paul Reiser (Dr. Owens), Jamie Campbell Bower (Peter Ballard), Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson), Eduardo Franco (Argyle), Sherman Augustus (Lt. Colonel Sullivan), Mason Dye (Jason Carver), Nikola Djuricko (Yuri), Tom Wlaschiha (Dmitri), Myles Truitt (Patrick), Regina Ting Chen (Ms. Kelly), Grace Van Dien (Chrissy), Logan Riley Bruner (Fred Benson), Logan Allen (Jake), Elodie Grace Orkin (Angela), John Reynolds (Officer Callahan), Rob Morgan (Chief Powell), Amybeth McNulty (Vickie), and Freddy Krueger himself Robert Englund (Victor Creel).

It was announced back in June that Linda Hamilton is joining the cast for Stranger Things season 5.

Stranger Things is produced by Monkey Massacre Productions and 21 Laps Entertainment. Series creators The Duffer Brothers serve as executive producers alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment, Iain Paterson, and Curtis Gwinn.

Directed by Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) from a screenplay by Patrick Aison (Jack Ryan), Prey has the following synopsis: Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

John Davis produced Prey with Marty Ewing and Jhane Myers, who is a Native Comanche. Lawrence Gordon, Ben Rosenblatt, James E. Thomas, John C. Thomas, and Marc Toberoff served as executive producers.

The film stars Amber Midthunder (Roswell, New Mexico), Dakota Beavers (of the band WesternBoy), Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home), Julian Black Antelope (Tribal), Cody Big Tobacco (The Revenant), Skye Pelletier (Burden of Truth), Tymon Carter (The Emigrants), and Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat (Shoresy), with Dane DiLiegro (American Horror Stories), a 6’9″ former basketball player who has experience working in creature suits, as the Predator.
