Venom: The Last Dance

A third film in the Marvel Comics-inspired Venom franchise made its way through production last year, shutting down for several months along the way due to the Screen Actors Guild strike. Now the film, titled Venom: The Last Dance, is heading for an October 25th theatrical release – but the first batch of viewers had their chance to see the movie last night, and the reactions that are coming out of that screening are quite positive, with several saying that this is the best movie in the Venom trilogy! Some of the reactions can be seen in the X embeds below.

The first Venom was scripted by Jeff Pinker, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel. Ruben Fleischer directed that film, which made $856 million. But then Fleischer turned his focus to making Zombieland: Double Tap and Uncharted – so Andy Serkis took over as director on Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Which was written by Kelly Marcel, working from a story she crafted with star Tom Hardy. That sequel earned $506 million at the pandemic era global box office. Serkis said he would be glad to return to the helm for a follow-up – but when Venom 3 actually did come up, he opted to focus on other projects instead. So Venom: The Last Dance marks the feature directorial debut of Kelly Marcel. She also wrote the screenplay, based (again) on a story she crafted with Hardy.

Hardy is reprising the role of Eddie Brock / Venom for this sequel, and he is joined in the cast by Juno Temple (Ted Lasso), Clark Backo (Letterkenny), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). Official details on the new characters have not been revealed – but no, Ejiofor is not playing his Doctor Strange character Baron Mordo, since the Venom films are set in a different universe than the Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Here is the official synopsis from the studio: In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance. The marketing has revealed that Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, shows up in the movie – and Marcel has said this is “just the beginning” for the villain. Since this is meant to be the last Venom movie, that seems to give some credibility to the rumors that Knull will carry on into the next Spider-Man movie.

Here’s a sample of the first reactions:

Venom: The Last Dance has been rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, bloody images and strong language. Are you looking forward to the film? What do you think of the first reactions? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

There was a rumor that he might be playing Orwell Taylor, the leader of the group known as The Jury. As ComicBookMovie noted, “that group existed solely to take out Venom, with each member of The Jury outfitted in powerful armoured suits and tech based on Tony Stark’s designs. Throw in the fact that they had sonic blasters and flamethrowers, and it’s not hard to imagine the government tasking this clandestine group with taking out an apparent threat like Venom.” Members of The Jury in the comic book source material include Sentry, Bomblast, Firearm, Ramshot, Wysper, and Screech.

Gore Verbinski would seem to have hit a snag in his big-budget blockbuster career after his Lone Ranger movie for Disney became a notoriously bloated flop. However, he was able to return with a smaller directorial effort after that, with the suspense film A Cure for Wellness. It has been eight years since the release of A Cure for Wellness, and Verbinski returns from his hiatus to helm an action-adventure film with the humorous title Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. The movie sports an impressive cast, including Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña, Haley Lu Richardson, Zazie Beetz and Juno Temple. The film has just started production on location in South Africa.

The description of the movie’s plot, according to Deadline, reads, “The film, written by Matthew Robinson (Love & Monsters), centers on a man from the future (Rockwell) who arrives at a diner in Los Angeles where he must recruit the precise combination of eclectic patrons (Richardson, Peña, Beetz, Temple) to join in him on a one-night quest to save the world.” The production of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die comes from the studio Constantin Film, whose projects include Resident Evil, Fantastic Four and The Three Musketeers. Robert Kulzer is on board serving as producer. Meanwhile, Verbinski’s Blind Wink Production and 3 Arts Entertainment are also producing the movie with casting Director Denise Chaian, Erwin Stoff (known for projects like I Am Legend), and Oly Obst on board. One of the most recent Sam Rockwell movies, Argylle, featured the actor in an action driven role, but otherwise it’s a genre he rarely played a hero in.

Gore Verbinski is best known for helming the first three installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as well as the American remake of The Ring and the excellent animated movie Rango before he and Johnny Depp failed to recapture the Pirates of the Caribbean success with The Lone Ranger. The director may have been out of the spotlight for some time. However, his break was not for the lack of trying to manifest new work, as he’s had numerous projects in the works that have fallen apart. He was attached to a live-action adaptation of Bioshock for many years before the project was shelved and was also in talks to direct the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum. One of the last projects Verbinski was said to be working on was an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s The Sandkings for Netflix, but there haven’t been any updates on the project for quite some time.

After back-to-back bombs like Morbius and Madame Web, Sony‘s Spider-Verse needs a win. Thankfully, Kelly Marcel’s Venom 3 is nearing completion, and the symbiote is known to entertain audiences while bringing home the box office. Speaking with Variety at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Ted Lasso and Venom 3 star Juno Temple said filming for the threequel is nearly done. She described the experience of working on Venom 3 as a “wonderful ride,” adding the film is bound to please Venom fans.

“We’re coming close to an end at the moment,” Temple said. “It’s been a wild, wonderful ride. It’s so new to me. It’s a big set! This is crazy. It’s been so much fun and I got to work with such cool people. I’ve been so lucky in my career to just have the most incredible casts. I can’t wait for it to get out into the world. I think it’s going to be a good one.”

While confidence in Sony’s ability to deliver a solid Spider-Man-less film is uneasy after the dismal performance of Madame Web, it’s worth noting that Venom movies typically display a unique charm. Whether it’s Tom Hardy’s wacky and unpredictable performance as Eddie Brock or the symbiote coming out at a blacklight rave, Sony’s Venom movies are “awfully good” in the way you’d want a project like this to be. We don’t need every superhero movie to be severe or carry dire consequences. Sometimes, you want to swim in a lobster tank or scare the bejesus out of your neighbor who won’t turn their music down.

Kelly Marcel is the third director to helm a movie in Sony’s Venom franchise after Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and Andy Serkis (Venom: Let There Be Carnage). Reports indicate Marcel has a great working relationship with Hardy, and the duo has plenty of great ideas for Venom 3. Both creatives have been driving forces in bringing Venom’s adventures to screens, not to mention securing boatloads of cash for Sony and Marvel.

Juno Temple, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Clark Backo star alongside Tom Hardy in Venom 3 as primary cast members. Plot details remain a mystery, though we’ll hear more soon.

Are you excited about Venom 3, or has Sony burned you one too many times with its questionable direction for the Spider-Verse? Let us know where you stand in the comments below.

Believe it or not, but it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Gore Verbinski’s last movie — the underrated A Cure for Wellness — but the director finally has a new project in the works. Deadline reports that Verbinski has assembled a fantastic ensemble of actors for his action-adventure movie titled Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

Sam Rockwell, one of my all-time favourite actors, will be leading the cast, which includes Haley Lu Richardson (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp), and Zazie Beetz (Joker). Rockwell will star as a “man from the future” who arrives at a Los Angeles diner to recruit a “precise combination of disgruntled patrons to join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence.

Matthew Robinson (Love & Monsters) has penned the script for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, with production set to kick off later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.

Gore Verbinski is best known for helming the first three installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as well as the American remake of The Ring, the excellent animated movie Rango, and notorious box-office bomb The Lone Ranger. It’s not like the director has been kicking up his heels all this time, as he’s had numerous projects in the works that have fallen apart. He was attached to a live-action adaptation of Bioshock for many years before the project was shelved and was also in talks to direct the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum. One of the last projects Verbinski was said to be working on was an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s The Sandkings for Netflix, but we haven’t heard any updates on the project for a while.

Sam Rockwell can currently be seen starring in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle. The film follows Bryce Dallas Howard as Elly Conway, a reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books — which center on secret agent Argylle (Cavill) and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate — begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Rockwell plays Aiden, a cat-allergic spy who races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. A third film in the Marvel Comics-inspired Venom franchise started filming back in June, then had to shut down production when the Screen Actors Guild strike began in July. Earlier this month, that strike came to an end – and writer/director Kelly Marcel and star Tom Hardy quickly got back to work on Venom 3. When filming resumed, Hardy celebrated by sharing an image on Instagram. Just over a week later, he has shared another image from the set, along with a statement… and in this statement, he indicates that he might be leaving the Venom franchise as a trilogy, as he refers to the new film as “the last dance”.

Hardy said, “V3N0M 3. The Last dance. Thankfully we are back to shooting, and I want to take a moment just to thank all the teams thus far on the ride from V1 to here. Aall our fantastic cast and crew- good friends and family – we’ve come a long way. It’s been and continues to be a lot of fun, this journey. There’s always hard turns to burn when we work, but doesn’t feel as hard when you love what you do and when you know you have great material and the support, at all sides, of a great team. Surrounded by talented and passionate departments and when surrounded by people you love and care about, it doesn’t get any better. I want to mention very briefly how proud of my Director, writing partner and dear friend Kelly Marcel I am. Watching you taking the helm on this one fills me with pride, it is an honour. Trust your gut, your instincts are always spot on. First class – I back you 100%. As always. And I absolutely love working with you and watching you take on bigger challenges every time. And to my great friend, face plant chief operator and brother @jaketomuri Jacob you still look f all like me bro. Here’s to a great ride!!!

Fargo Season 5 TV Review https://www.joblo.com/fargo-season-5-tv-review/ https://www.joblo.com/fargo-season-5-tv-review/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 14:16:33 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=723367 Juno Temple and Jon Hamm headline the latest brilliant entry in Noah Hawley's noir-comedy anthology series.

Plot: The latest installment of Fargo is set in Minnesota and North Dakota, 2019.  After an unexpected series of events lands Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon in hot water with the authorities, this seemingly typical Midwestern housewife is suddenly plunged back into a life she thought she had left behind.

Review: Before the first season of Fargo premiered in 2014, I thought it was a bad idea. It should have been a clue that Noah Hawley’s series would be a masterpiece since it came with The Coen Brothers’ approval. A decade later, the fifth entry in the anthology series is arriving, set in the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Following the series alternating historical and contemporary timelines, the new season trades period settings of the 1970s and 1920s for a familiar-looking world anchored in the political divide of liberals and conservatives that raged those four long years ago. But, rather than being a story about politics, Fargo’s fifth season returns to the noir roots of the original film and The Coens’ earlier classic, Blood Simple. Opening with a sequence showing the opposite of “Minnesota nice,” we find Dot Lyon getting arrested for tazing a cop, which kicks off a series of events that connects multiple police departments across Minnesota and North Dakota along with a connection to England five centuries ago. In short, this is par for the course for Noah Hawley and yet another brilliant foray into the world of Fargo.

Fargo review

Like all four previous seasons, Fargo consists of ten episodes. Six of those episodes were made available for this review, and so much happens in the chapters that I have seen that I am anxious that Hawley and his creative team will be able to tie everything up. I have felt this way during the same point in every season of Fargo, and the series never disappoints. However, I am especially nervous this season as I am more invested in this cast than ever. Not since Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton kicked off this series have I cared as much about the interactions between two characters as I have between Dot Lyon and Roy Tillman. The first season puts Dot (Temple) through the wringer as she is arrested, kidnapped, shot at, and escapes from a pair of hired thugs. By the end of the first episode, we know that Dorothy Lyon is not who she claims to be. It is not until the second chapter that we meet Sheriff Roy Tillman (Hamm). From the second episode onward, Fargo weaves what may be its most sprawling cast of characters, yet not one but four law enforcement agencies are involved as Dot’s identity spawns a series of conflicts you must see to believe.

While many series have tackled similar plots about fake identities, crime syndicates, and detectives on the prowl, none of them handle it with a surreal sense of humor as Fargo does. Beneath the Minnesota accent and sheen of friendliness, there is a sinister streak that becomes even bleaker when you get stabbed by someone grinning from ear to ear. With four seasons of intricate murder, blackmail, and other criminal plots, this season is somewhat old hat. Still, Hawley and his writing staff have concocted one of their best stories to date, much of it accentuated by the talented cast. Led by Juno Temple, Fargo’s fifth season is as good as ever, with the acclaimed Ted Lasso actress balancing her character’s idyllic suburban mom with a fighting spirit that one character refers to as a tiger. Dot is small in stature, but she is more than capable of defending her family as she blends the best of Home Alone and MacGyver for some of the deadliest makeshift traps I have seen on screen. At the same time, Jon Hamm plays a bit against type as one of the meanest and scariest villains this series has had. Roy Tillman is part dictator, part lawman, and fully scary as he rules over his North Dakota county with an iron fist. Alongside his son Gator (Joe Keery), Roy has a reason for wanting to find Dot, which results in hiring Ole Munch (Sam Spruell), a hitman with a mysterious past all his own. When things go awry with Dot’s kidnapping, Munch opposes the Tillmans and the cops.

Fargo has given us some truly great law enforcement characters through the years, and this season, we get multiple. On top of Jon Hamm and Joe Keery’s villainous cops, we have Richa Moorjani as Deputy Indira Olmstead and Lamorne Morris as Deputy Witt Farr. Both officers enter the story after interacting with Dot in very different ways. Still, they must join forces to figure out why the seemingly meek housewife is the target of so many nefarious characters. They also run afoul of Dot’s powerful mother-in-law, Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a rich executive who does not fully trust her daughter-in-law. Lorraine and her attorney, Danish Graves (Dave Foley), enter the story in a very interesting manner that seems tangential at first but evolves over the course of the first six episodes of the season. Set around Halloween, this season of Fargo carries a pervasive anxiety from episode to episode that is at once foreboding and even funnier than usual. Lamorne Morris and Dave Foley are more often associated with their comedic work, and Jon Hamm has proven to be as funny as he is dramatic when the material calls for it. I keep returning to the word balance, which this season has more than any of the four prior entries.

Noah Hawley continues his trend from last season in directing the series’ opening episodes before sharing duties with other filmmakers, including Donald Murphy. Hawley also has his most solo scriptwriting credits since the second season, writing seven of the ten episodes and sharing duties on the remaining three with Bob DeLaurentis, April Shih, and Thomas Bezucha. It is clear that rather than put out a season every year, Hawley has taken to heart his promise of only adding another volume of Fargo if and when the story is worth telling. After the Chris Rock-led fourth season debuted in 2020, I never thought we would be waiting three years for the fifth season, but I assure you that this entry was worth the wait. Noah Hawley, who is at work on his Alien television series and already ventured into Marvel Comics with the brilliant Legion, knows what the Coen Brothers set out to do with Fargo as a film and continues that with a fifth triumph in a row.

Fargo review

From the music this season, using a familiar cue from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining to the bizarre flashback early in the season that is straight out of the Coen Brothers playbook, Fargo’s fifth season once again forges a story that is at once surreal and hyperreal, blending tones and genres together for a distinct viewing experience. Juno Temple and Jon Hamm are exceptional at the top of a cast with no weak points whatsoever. Noah Hawley has once again crafted a tale that is worthy of the title Fargo. You will be hooked from the opening scene through the very end of every episode, paying attention to the little details that will have you rewinding to ensure you saw what you think you saw. Without giving anything away, pay attention to the nipple rings. Like the four seasons of Fargo that came before it, this is one of the best series of the year and will have you laughing and on the edge of your seat in equal measure.

A third film in the Marvel Comics-inspired Venom franchise started filming back in June, but production had to shut down when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit in July. That strike finally came to an end earlier this month, and as Sony Pictures prepared to get Venom 3 back into production, they announced that it’s now aiming for a November 8, 2024 theatrical release. The project has now resumed filming – and star Tom Hardy has celebrated the return to production by sharing an image from the set! You can check it out at THIS LINK.

As you can see, this image gives away nothing about the filming. But at least it lets us know that cameras are rolling again.

Which was written by Kelly Marcel, working from a story she crafted with Hardy. That sequel earned $506 million at the pandemic era global box office. Serkis said he would be glad to return to the helm for a follow-up – but when Venom 3 actually did come up, he opted to focus on other projects instead. So Venom 3 will be Marcel’s feature directorial debut. She also wrote the screenplay, based (again) on a story she crafted with Hardy.

Hardy is reprising the role of Eddie Brock / Venom for this sequel, and he is joined in the cast by Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). Official details on Temple and Ejiofor’s characters have not been revealed – but no, Ejiofor is not playing his Doctor Strange character Baron Mordo, since the Venom films are set in a different universe than the Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

Are you looking forward to Venom 3, and are you glad to hear it has resumed filming? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

A third film in the Marvel Comics-inspired Venom franchise started filming back in June, and at that time Sony Pictures was aiming to get Venom 3 into theatres sometime in October of 2024. Production had to come to a halt when the Screen Actors Guild went on strike in July – but Sony was obviously confident that the strike was going to be wrapped up quickly when they announced that same month that they had moved Venom 3 up to a July release. But the strike only came to an end last night, and as Venom 3 gears up to head back into production, Deadline reports that Sony now has it scheduled to reach theatres on November 8, 2024.

November 8, 2024 is a date Sony always had reserved for one of their Marvel-inspired properties… they just didn’t expect Venom 3 to be the film that would land on that date.
