John Wick: Chapter 4 may have felt like a natural endpoint for the franchise (at least when it came to its title character), but Lionsgate has already confirmed plans for John Wick: Chapter 5. However, the big question is, will it actually happen? Director Chad Stahelski isn’t ruling anything out, but if John Wick: Chapter 5 does happen, he knows he won’t be able to top the fourth movie.

The honest truth is you don’t. You simply don’t. There’s no topping what we did. That’s the end. That’s the deal. That’s what we found closure for. Look, sometimes, we’ll keep things in development. My creative team and I can’t stop thinking about Wick,” Stahelski told THR. “Sometimes, we’ll use development as an exercise, but is there an opportunity to do [John Wick 5]? Of course, there is, whether it’s for money or for creativity. Of course, there’s an opportunity, but it keeps us thinking. Jesus, in the last three years, I’ve already had three or four versions of a John Wick 5. They were different ways to crack the story, but it’s almost a mental exercise for me.

Stahelski added that they have “some really good ideas” for a potential John Wick: Chapter 5 but that it wouldn’t be part of the John Wick: Chapter 4 storyline. “It would not be what you would think it is. If we could ever crack it to where Keanu and I thought it was a great idea and it didn’t feel like a cheese-out, then that’s great,” he said. “But as far as [John Wick: Chapter 4], we’ve peaked. At least I have. That’s my apex. We ended it. It’s a complete story. I watch it now, and I feel very happy about it, but we wouldn’t try to outdo it. We wouldn’t try to add on to that. It’d have to be a completely different storyline.

Even without a fifth installment of the main series, there are still plenty of John Wick projects in development. Stahelski said that they’re “knee-deep in development on a feature anime about John Wick. It’s a prequel to the movies, which is awesome. It’s fun that it’s in a different medium.

The next John Wick project to hit our screens will be Ballerina, a spinoff which stars Ana de Armas as a young woman with killer skills who sets out to get revenge when hitmen kill her family. As the film takes place in the John Wick universe, it will feature appearances from several franchise characters, including Ian McShane as Winston, the owner of the Continental Hotel, the late Lance Reddick as Charon, the Continental’s concierge, and Anjelica Huston as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma. Keanu Reeves will also make an appearance as John Wick. The film will also include Catalina Sandino Moreno, Gabriel Bryne, and Norman Reedus in undisclosed roles. The film is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2025.

Would you like to see John Wick: Chapter 5, or should they leave Baba Yaga alone?

John Wick directors fought with financiers to keep Keanu Reeves’ beard https://www.joblo.com/john-wick-beard/ https://www.joblo.com/john-wick-beard/#respond Mon, 21 Oct 2024 21:44:48 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=803653 Chad Stahelski and David Leitch fought with financiers to keep Keanu Reeves' beard in the first John Wick movie.

The first John Wick movie will soon return to theaters to celebrate its 10th anniversary. As the franchise has spawned sequels, spinoffs, TV series, video games, and more, it’s easy to forget that the first film was such a surprise. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch faced an uphill battle to make John Wick, including fighting with financiers to keep Keanu Reeves’ beard.

It’s hard to imagine John Wick without his beard (which looks great on him), but financiers were concerned that it would make the film more difficult to sell in international markets. “We were trying to do a modern-day Greek mythology fantasy movie. That’s not mainstream. So we wanted to do something cool with Keanu,” Stahelski told Business Insider. “But the money people, they wanted to see Keanu f***ing Reeves. ‘Point Break’ Keanu, ‘Speed’ Keanu. And I don’t know if this exists anymore, but at the time we were told by the powers that be you don’t cover up your leading man’s face with a beard.

Leitch added, “I don’t want to get into it, but since then I have had contentious conversations about stars having facial hair. “He needs to be clean-shaven for international!” That’s the classic studio line.

Stahelski continued, “We wanted people to think, ‘Oh, this is not the Keanu we know.’ We caught a lot of shit. But we felt you can’t fire us, so first day of shooting, we had Keanu in the beard, and later that week, when they watched the dailies, with cinematographer Jonathan Sela’s now famous half-light shots, people f***ing loved it.

Our first John Wick spinoff movie will be Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas as a young woman with killer skills who sets out to get revenge when hitmen kill her family.

Update: This past week, it was being said by sources close to Ballerina that John Wick director, Chad Stahelski, reshot most of the film without the original director, Len Wiseman. The production is now saying those claims are inaccurate. According to them (who contacted us directly), director Len Wiseman led the additional photography on set in Budapest with producer Chad Stahelski there to help in the creation of action design on the new scenes that would enhance the film and create bigger action sequences. As per usual procedure on films, Ballerina‘s reshoots were not out of the ordinary, and the process had taken place in less than a month.

According to our source, Chad Stahelski’s involvement in building upon key action sequences was important to Wiseman; Stahelski has been an enormous champion of Wiseman from the onset of pre-production and Wiseman is equally appreciative of Stahelski’s support as one of the architects of the John Wick universe. However, during the additional shooting, Wiseman had suffered a serious health issue and was briefly hospitalized. Stahelski covered Wiseman’s scenes during that time. Wiseman would fully recover and had been back finishing the film alongside producer Chad Stahelski, Thunder Road, and the full filmmaking team

Original article:
News of the extensive reshoots for Ballerina has been at the forefront of the film’s hype since the John Wick spin-off had been delayed a year to revamp the footage that Lionsgate was not satisfied with. Earlier this year, Ian McShane, who is a staple of the Wick films and reprises his role as Winston for Ballerina, explained that the reshoots were so extensive that he even gave it the term, “new shoots.” “They’re new-shooting for Ballerina.” Then, he continues, “You know, it’s like, they’ve gotta protect the franchise. We did it about a year ago. And they’ve looked at it and Chad’s come in. And they wanna make it better cause they have to protect [the franchise].”

It was conveyed that Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski was brought in to work with Ballerina director Len Wiseman for the new shoots. Now, according to The Wrap, multiple sources have revealed that Stahelski had re-shot most of the movie and the former director was not at all present. The new shoots had reportedly taken place in Prague for two to three months without Wiseman. One of the sources explained, “Of course, Chad had to clean up someone else’s mess. Remember, this film is basically John Wick 3.5. This story happens before John Wick 4 and after that film, they can’t have a failure in anything ‘Wick’ related.”

The source added, “Chad is going to do Highlander, but cleaning up Ballerina pushed him by five months for sure.” Stahelski was set to work on Highlander with Henry Cavill, but the delay would free him up to accept a role in Voltron from Amazon MGM. That project goes into production later this year while it is being said that more work will be done to the Highlander script.

Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated situation for the studio Lionsgate, as the film Borderlands would also bring in Deadpool director Tim Miller to take over duties from former director Eli Roth. A lot is riding on Ballerina to save the studio from a disastrous 2024 after suffering flops like the aforementioned Borderlands as well as The Killer’s Game, The Crow remake and their major gamble with Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.

THR reports that Chad Stahelski is producing The Professionals. When I read the title, I initially thought this might be a remake of the 1966 Western starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin, but no. The project is said to be a cross between John Wick and Clue. I can get down with that.

The film follows “a group of contract killers stranded in an English countryside estate when one of them is murdered and the remaining group has to solve the death.” Stahelski will produce alongside Alex Young and Jason Spitz, his partners at 87Eleven, as well as Jason Michael Berman and Jordan Moldo of Mandalay Pictures. Hunter Perot, grandson of the late Ross Perot, wrote the initial draft of the screenplay. Madison Turner, a stuntman-turned-writer and son of longtime stunt performer Tierre Turner, is now tackling the script.

Chad Stahelski has plenty of projects on his slate, including a reboot of Highlander. The project has spent years in development, but at long last, it finally seems to be moving forward. Earlier this summer, Stahelski said that he was slated to start shooting early next year. “We start shooting in January in Scotland, that’s why I go right after I leave. I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout. It’s another opportunity to do a property that I love,” he said. “I love what it’s about, I love working with immortality and love stories through time. I think it’s a good way to take a great period piece, and sci-fi, and mix them together.

He’s also developing a TV series based on Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger novels; a feature-film adaptation of hit video game Ghosts of Tsushima; as well as John Wick: The High Table, a TV series taking place directly after the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 which aims to “combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age.” He’s a busy dude.

Stahelski also produces the upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas as a young woman with killer skills who sets out to get revenge when hitmen kill her family. The film will hit theaters on June 6, 2025.

Awesome Art

For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

Bryan Carey is an artist and pop culture enthusiast with a particular passion for 80’s & 90’s film and television. Specializing primarily in digital illustration with a focus on bold colors and textures, his work can regularly be found at Southern California’s largest pop culture curator Hero Complex Gallery as well as the pages of art and entertainment related books from popular publishers such as Printed In Blood.

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
BRYAN:
My father and grandfather were both artists. My aunt is an artist. My daughter is an artist. Almost everyone in my family is an artist, musician or creative of some kind so I guess it’s in the blood. When I was young, and before music came along, all I was really good at was drawing. Mostly pencil. I did what most young artists do and tried to redraw all my favorite comic covers, characters and panels and would sometimes even create my own. I was a huge comic collector and I still have all of my childhood comics to this day! All through school I was known as “that kid that draws really good” and any time there was a project or book report that I could use as an excuse to draw something, I would. So often that my teachers would tell me I’d be “drawing for Disney someday” haha.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
Drew Struzan, John Alvin, Tom Chantrell, Bob Peak, Tom Jung, Richard Amsel, Frank Miller, Jim Lee, Alex Ross, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane and Erik Larsen. As it’s been said before I’m sure, I only knew a few of their names at the time, but their work was as imprinted on me as the movies and comics themselves.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
First, there’s the artists who’s posters I initially found and collected that inspired me to get back into art: Gary Pullin, Jason Edmiston, Phantom City Creative, WBYK(Sonny & Biddy), Matt Ryan Tobin, Laurent Durieux, Vance Kelly, Olly Moss, Matt Taylor, Ken Taylor, Tyler Stout, Dan Mumford, Tom Whalen, Patrick Connan and pretty much all the artists that kicked down the alternative movie poster doors for the rest of us circa 2010-2015. Most, if not all of these artists used or still use vivid colors and bold line work and textures or any combination thereof. All things I tend to love in pop culture art.

Then there’s the artists who I discovered after getting back into art myself. Many of whom are further down the road than I am, so to speak, and doing inspiring work:
Courtney Autumn Martin, Chris Koehler, Luke Preece, Ryan Smallman, Tom Walker, David Henry Lantz, Barret Chapman, Dan Schlitzkus, Dakota Randall, Steven Luros Holliday, Justin Froning, Benedict Woodhead..

Finally, there’s the artists I tend to chat with most often about this whole art endeavor who are in a similar place to me: Bryan Johnson, John Dunn, Shannon Burton, Julián Rodríguez, Laura Emilie Bernard, Kevin Bravo.

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
Boy, there’s probably a million answers to that question and I certainly don’t think I’m the most qualified person to be handing out advise as I’m still learning the ropes myself, but if I had to say something I’d say try not to compare. Everyone is on their own path and everyone’s path looks a little different. Comparing style or success almost always leads to feelings of defeat and a loss of passion in my experience, which only slows you down. Just stay focused on your goals, put in the work and be patient. It’ll come.

One other piece of advice I’ve always loved is from the legendary Steve Martin; “Be undeniably good”. Now, most of us are still a long ways off from that, but I do believe that you’ll get a hell of a lot farther aiming for that benchmark than you will asking yourself “why them, not me?”. If you just keep putting in the work, at some point, it will be impossible to ignore you.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
Well, given my work/family/art balance, I try not to over commit myself. My wife and daughter are incredibly patient and supportive and, quite frankly, I couldn’t do this without them so in the interest of everyones sanity, I try to keep things as loose and tentative as possible. That said, I’m almost always working on something for Hero Complex Gallery or fun new art book contributions and projects. I’m also hoping to start tabling at conventions in the not too distant future so I’ll be gearing up for that and making some fun things to bring along real soon! If nothing else, I’m pretty good about keeping my website and social media updated on what’s coming up so keep a lookout!

Being a fansite, we have to ask you… What are some of your favorite movies/TV shows of all time?
Man, another loaded one! Well, I would say my favorite movie of all time probably alternates between Carpenter’s The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China and Alien depending on my mood. Classics like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, The Karate Kid, Rocky, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Gremlins, The Goonies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also all have a special place in my heart, but with that said, I’m a sucker for just about any 80’s & 90’s action/horror/scifi cult classics you can think of. The Burbs, Adventures in Babysitting, Nothing but Trouble, The Running Man, Little Monsters, The Gate, The Blob… this list could go on forever!

As far as TV, and this will come as no surprise I’m sure, I love Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Glow and any documentaries about the stuff I grew up on. And for non nostalgic stuff, I really enjoyed True Detective, Ozark and Breaking Bad.

Nobody: What Happened to this Movie? https://www.joblo.com/nobody-movie-2021/ https://www.joblo.com/nobody-movie-2021/#respond Sat, 31 Aug 2024 05:01:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=598011 Nobody was one of the biggest hits of the pandemic and make Bob Odenkirk an action star. How was it made and what do you know about a sequel?

The post Nobody: What Happened to this Movie? appeared first on JoBlo.

Let’s be real. If you had to name the most badass action movie of the past few years, what’s the first flick that comes to mind? Yeah yeah, John Wick might be all the rage for teenagers, Liam Neeson continues to do his geriatric Charlie Bronson, and you can never discount Jason Statham and his brand of brutal butt-kicking. But come on, as far as violently visceral and scintillatingly satisfying underdog tales loaded with realistic fisticuffs and gore-sodden gunfights – nobody does it better than Nobody! Indeed, the 2021 cinematic blitzkrieg starring Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul as an unassuming everyman by day and certified ass-kicker by night hit all the right notes to deliver a vicious and delicious revenge dish for the ages.

With that being said, did you know that a Nobody 2 is currently back in the works? Did you know there were discussions about making a Nobody and John Wick crossover movie? Hell, were you even aware that the entire plot of the movie was inspired by a real-life home invasion experienced by Odenkirk himself? Well, we’re about to dig up all the buried bodies and hidden skeletons in Nobody’s past and give y’all a heaping dose of What Happened to this Movie.

As alluded to, Nobody was inspired by an idea by Bob Odenkirk after the actor experienced not one, but two, terrifying home invasions in real life. One of the break-ins was particularly traumatic for Odenkirk and his family, with the actor publicly recounting the time that burglars stormed into his house in Los Angeles. After bravely trapping the invaders in his basement, Odenkirk called the police to respond to the crime. However, Odenkirk was so discouraged and dissatisfied with the police response that he imagined what would have transpired if he had taken swift vigilante justice in his own hands and pulled a full-on Steven Seagal in the heat of the moment.

Nobody, Bob Odenkirk

As Odenkirk continued to envision how things might have played out if he “was a badass” in real life, the idea bloomed into a cinematic story. For Odenkirk, the motivation for the story was meant to explore how “You always wish you’d done more” to protect one’s family in such a harrowing scenario. Apart from the home invasions his family suffered, Odenkirk was also interested in exploring his own internal struggles with aging and feeling irrelevant and ineffectual as his children matured.

Once Odenkirk’s concept was approved and his casting of ass-kicking family man Hutch Mansell was announced, Nobody began development in January 2018. John Wick writer Derek Kolstad conceived the story and penned the screenplay for Nobody, with John Wick co-director David Leitch producing the project for STX Entertainment. Around the same time in 2018, Russian director Ilya Naishuller was tapped to direct Nobody on the strength of his breathless action movie Hardcore Henry. By 2019, Nobody swapped distributors after moving from STX Entertainment to Universal Pictures. Christopher Lloyd and Connie Nielsen were cast in the fall of 2019 to play Hutch’s father David and wife Becca, respectively. It was Odenkirk’s idea to cast Lloyd as his father. Naishuller immediately loved the idea and described why he thought the decision worked so well, saying:

“Someone with positive baggage wielding a shotgun and killing people is gonna be more fun to see than someone we’ve seen do that.”

To his credit, Lloyd almost declined the role due to having irritable bowel syndrome. Yet, like a real trooper, Lloyd declined to use stunt doubles for the action scenes and insisted on toting the heavy shotguns in the film on his own. Never mind the IBS, the irony of Doc Brown dumping 1.21 gigawatts of lead on a gang of Russian mobsters only adds to the actors’ towering legend. Believe it or not, Odenkirk and Lloyd share the same birthday, October 22nd, and celebrated together when they both turned one year older while making the movie.

The roles of Hutch’s children went to Gage Munroe and Paisley Cadorath, with Aleksei Serebryakov as Russian mob boss Yulian Kuznetsov, and the legendary Michael Ironside shows up as Hutch’s father-in-law and boss. Following the casting process, Naishuller was pleasantly surprised that Kolstad was not too precious with his screenplay, telling the director that “the best idea wins,” should changes be required. After polishing the script and showing it to his Russian mobster friend, who in turn showed the script to associates in the Obschak (the Russian Mafia), Naishuller was delighted to hear how authentic and realistic the story was. We’ll delve into the efforts taken to make the movie as gritty and hyper-realistic as possible in a bit.

First, it’s worth noting that principal photography on Nobody began on September 30, 2019, and lasted until November 3, 2019. The whole movie was shot in just 34 days, which is quite a remarkable achievement given the excellent final result. Although filming commenced in Los Angeles, California for establishing shots, almost all of the movie was shot in Winnipeg, Canada. For instance, Hutch’s home was filmed at 20 Shillingstone Road in Winnipeg. Meanwhile, the unforgettable bus brawl was filmed on 171 Princess Street.

Speaking of the brutal bus battle, fans need to know that Odenkirk performed all of the fights and stunts in the film himself at age 56 and 57. To prepare for such a physically taxing performance, Odenkirk trained for two years before cameras began rolling. At the height of his training regiment, a famous unnamed actor whom Odenkirk respects greatly asked him why he was so committed to training when the studio could provide people to do the fighting for him. Odenkirk stands by the decision and has publicly stated, “I had so much fun doing the fight scenes!” It was Odenkirk’s idea to bash his head against the rail pole inside the bus. According to Odenkirk in the DVD commentary – which was recorded six months before the film was released – the idea was meant to reinforce Hutch’s status as an everyman rather than an infallible action hero. Odenkirk also trained under Swiss actor and Fight Coordinator Daniel Bernhardt, who plays one of the goons Hutch batters on the bus and knocks his teeth out. Meanwhile, the preamble of the bus fight was originally meant to utilize the song “Ava Marie” by Franz Schubert, suggesting that the Russian thugs were sent to Hutch as a gift from god to soothe his embattled soul. In the end, Steve Lawrence’s version of “I Gotta Be Me” was chosen to start the scene instead.

To backtrack a bit, Nobody was initially meant to open with the harrowing home invasion Hutch and his family encounter. However, to establish the mundane routine of Hutch’s daily suburban life, the opening montage of Hutch’s repetitive domestic cycle was added.

nobody sequel

Shortly following the home invasion that incites the plot of the movie, Hutch visits a tattoo parlor to find the assailants. The memorable scene features Hutch revealing his perilous past through a tattoo on his wrist. The tattoo resembles a pair of playing cards with the 7 of Spades and 2 of Diamonds. First of all, the number 72 is a numeric code for U.S. Green Berets, a branch of Marines that Hutch belonged to in the past. Furthermore, in Tarot readings, Spades are associated with bad luck, death, and violence. Meanwhile, Diamonds represent jewels, coins, and money. Therefore, in addition to indicating his past with the Green Berets, Hutch’s tattoo signifies that he has dealt with death, violence, and hard luck directly for money and riches in his life.

Speaking of Hutch’s mysterious past, the character turns out to be revealed as an Auditor and government assassin for the various “three letter agencies.” Hints to Hutch’s true nature are given throughout the movie. For example, the Russian pop song that the main villain Yulian sings in the dance club is titled “Buhgalter” by the band Kombinaciya. “Buhgalter” translates as Accountant, which alludes to Hutch’s role in the film as an intelligence community Auditor.

Another awesome moment in the movie comes when Hutch is joined by his dad David and his former colleague, Harry, played by Wu-Tang Clan’s Rza. According to Naishuller, Rza only had four days, including rehearsal, to complete his role. However, because he’s seen more action movies than Naishuller has, something the director admitted is “quite rare,” Rza was able to slip right into the violent shootouts without missing a beat. Meanwhile, during the intense shootout at David’s retirement home, Naishuller makes a cameo appearance as a Russian goon sent to kill Hutch’s father. Naishuller’s wife, Darya Charusha, also appears briefly as Yulian’s ruthless henchwoman in the movie.

Indeed, much of Nobody’s appeal comes from its hyper-realistic violence and palpably painful action scenes. According to Naishuller and Kolstad, this was not an accident. The Firearms Safety Coordinator for the movie – Dave Brown – instructs real police officers and military soldiers on how to shoot targets with pinpoint accuracy. Brown worked closely with Odenkirk and the two spent extensive time together discussing the physical and psychological toll such shootouts would have on the human body and mind.

Part of turning Hutch from an ordinary suburban dad to a merciless cutthroat killer was to depict the mental and physical agony the character endures throughout the movie. For instance, when the human body suffers enough physical punishment, the perception of time appears to slow down, which is an effect known as Tachypsychia. Hutch also experiences hearing loss and a narrow sense of tunnel vision after taking physical beatings, all of which were deliberate effects used in the movie to underscore Hutch’s realistic sense of pain and discomfort. It’s precisely Hutch’s vulnerabilities that make him easy to relate to and root for, and also sets him apart from most indestructible action heroes.

Considering Odenkirk’s demanding performance and the rapid 34-day filming schedule for Nobody, it’s a minor miracle that the production went smoothly without any major injuries or mishaps. According to the DVD commentary, the biggest issues that arose on set related to whether parmesan cheese should be layered on top of the lasagna during a dinner scene. Connie Nielsen reportedly did not care for the topping and a minor argument broke out on set. Beyond that, Nobody was reportedly made with very few production hitches and hiccups.

Yet, for as smoothly as the principal photography went, nothing could have prepared Naishuller and the Nobody team for the delayed release caused by the sudden outbreak of COVID-19. Before the pandemic resulted in a global lockdown, Nobody was scheduled to hit theaters on August 14, 2020. Once the outbreak of COVID-19 took place, the release of Nobody was delayed and rescheduled several times. Once the safety precautions were lifted, Nobody was eventually released theatrically on March 26, 2021, eight months after its initial release date. Fortunately, the movie came out when the masses were desperate to return to cinemas, and the movie became a financial success by turning a $16 million budget into a $57.5 million moneymaker worldwide.

Coupled with the critical plaudits, the commercial success of Nobody led the producers to consider a sequel of some kind. When Nobody bombarded theaters in March 2021, Connie Nielsen expressed her interest in returning for a sequel, declaring that she only took on the hapless role of Hutch’s wife so she could be part of a popular cinematic franchise.

By June 2021, Derek Kolstad began writing a script for Nobody 2, although the movie was not officially green-lit at the time. At the time, one of the ideas was to potentially make a Nobody and John Wick crossover movie. Remember, Leitch and Kolstad were partly responsible for creating the John Wick franchise and Nobody already has over connections to the popular action series. Secondly, a promotional poster for Nobody is very reminiscent of one of the posters for John Wick 2, with the guns aimed at Wick’s face replaced by fists pointed at Hutch’s head. The first trailer for Nobody also billed the movie as an intense action flick from the makers of John Wick. Also, in Nobody, Hutch discharges an empty magazine clip from his rifle in a way that is identical to the way John Wick does in John Wick 2. Furthermore, the song “The Impossible Dream” by The Quest heard in Nobody was also used in the trailer for John Wick 3

Although the potential for a Nobody and John Wick crossover appears to have been laid, Kolstad claimed that if does materialize, he would like to see small, subtle connections made between the two action franchises rather than a full-fledged mashup. Kolstad also stated that the crossover would be minimal and that Hutch and Wick would be allies if they shared screen time. However, since different studios distribute Nobody and John Wick, it will be difficult to combine the two franchises in the future. When speaking about the potential crossover in March 2021, Naishuller maintained hope and kept the door open, stating: “I mean, everything’s possible. Stranger things have definitely happened.”

nobody 2

While a Nobody and John Wick crossover doesn’t appear likely anytime soon, fans should rest easy knowing that a Nobody sequel continues to pick up steam.

In March 2022, one of the production companies behind the first film – 87North Productions – expressed interest in making Nobody 2. However, no official production date was given. The project lingered for a few more months until David Leitch announced in August 2022 that the studio was committed to producing a Nobody 2. By December 2022, it was announced that a sequel to Nobody was officially in production with a shooting schedule slated for 2023. Most recently, in January 2024, Nielsen confirmed that the sequel is currently in development and that her character will return alongside Bob Odenkirk. At the time, there’s no telling if Naishuller will direct Nobody 2

It’s also worth noting that, along with Nobody 2, Odenkirk is set to star in another action movie called Normal from screenwriter Derek Kolstad. The movie will be directed by Free Fire’s Ben Wheatley, with Odenkirk playing a sheriff named Ulysses in the small town of Normal, Illinois. Nobody producer Marc Provissiero is also set to work on Normal with Kolstad, Wheatley, and Odenkirk.

With not much else to cover, that’s essentially What Happened to Nobody! The story was inspired by Odenkirk’s real-life encounters with home invaders and became a kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy for the actor to live out onscreen what he couldn’t do in reality. Once the concept was green-lit, the creative forces behind the John Wick franchise – namely David Leitch and Derek Kolstad – propped the film up as a sick cinematic sidekick to the Keanu Reeves vehicle and launched Odenkirk’s newfangled career as an action star.

Although the film shoot experienced very little drama during a rapid 34-day schedule, the movie’s release was delayed several times due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Fortunately, by the time Nobody stormed the theaters in March 2021, moviegoers were ready to flood the cinemas and the film became a commercial and critical hit. As a result, a potential Nobody and John Wick crossover was flirted with, ultimately leading to the announcement that a standalone Nobody sequel is currently in development. For action movie fans, there’s no better news than hearing that Odenkirk will bring Hutch Mansell back to the big screen sometime in the future!

Deadline reports that John Wick director Chad Stahelski has snagged the rights to Jonathan Maberry’s Joe Ledger novels with plans to develop it as a TV series through his 87Eleven Entertainment production company.

The Joe Ledger series currently consists of 10 novels and follows the titular character, a Baltimore detective who is recruited into the Department of Military Sciences, a specialized entity of the US Government which deals with technologically advanced threats to the US and the world at large by terrorists. Such threats include zombies, vampires, aliens, and robots. “I really loved reading the Joe Ledger series. It’s an all-time epic action series with intrigue, suspense, and such engaging characters,” said Stahelski in a statement. “As I read it, I could see the immediate cinematic potential. I’m excited to be working with Jonathan to turn it into a TV series.”

Joe Ledger author Jonathan Maberry added, “Chad’s career, both behind and in front of the camera, pretty much defines the kinds of things I love to watch. The Matrix, The Crow, John Wick – and so many others are solidly in my wheelhouse. And we’re both lifelong martial artists as well as professional pop-culture geeks. When we sat down for the first time to discuss Joe Ledger, it was clear that he not only read the books but deeply and empathetically understood the characters. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone in Hollywood whose mind runs along tracks this similar to my own. He’s also a visionary and a hell of a lot of fun. This is what they mean when they talk about ‘Hollywood magic.’

This isn’t the first time a series based on the Joe Ledger novels has been in the works. Nearly 15 years ago, Javier Grillo-Marxuach was penning a Joe Ledger pilot script for ABC, but the studio didn’t move forward with it.

The Joe Ledger series isn’t the only TV project Stahelski has in the works. He’s also set to continue the story of John Wick with John Wick: The High Table. Taking place directly after the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, the series aims to “combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age.” Stahelski will executive produce the project alongside Keanu Reeves, and will also direct the pilot episode.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is gearing up for the new season, but his off-season activities are heating up ever since he catapulted to fame (above the Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes) with his crossover appeal as he and pop superstar Taylor Swift made headlines as a couple. Kelce is already set to make his acting debut in the upcoming Ryan Murphy horror series Grotesquerie. The NFL star will be starring alongside Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville in the new FX show. Grotesquerie finds Murphy reuniting with his normal run of collaborators Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken.

According to Deadline, Adam Sandler, who frequently works with sports figures in his movies, has found a small cameo role for Kelce in the upcoming Netflix sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. Sandler appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon when he talked about cameos as he writes the sequel with longtime SNL collaborator Tim Herlihy. Sandler stated, “We have a nice something for Travis. He’s gonna come by.” Sandler continues to profess, “He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

However, Kelce’s biggest project may be an action film from the creative team behind the John Wick franchise. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Kelce is in talks to star in Loose Cannons. The film is being developed at Lionsgate, which may also potentially produce a Rush Hour 4, with John Wick director Chad Stahelski producing with Jason Spitz, who is his partner at their stunt-centric production company 87Eleven Entertainment, as well as Alex Young. Tim Dowling, whose screenwriting credits include the Adam Sandler comedy Just Go With It, penned the script for Loose Cannons.

Per THR, the concept of the film “centers on how every police precinct, at least in this movie’s world, has a crazy, out of control, rule-breaking officer on staff. But rather than pair them with a straight arrow and by-the-book partner, the premise here is that an unhinged person is paired with someone just as out of line as they are. In Cannons, two loose cannons are forced to partner up after their precincts merge due to budget cuts and no one wants to work with them. The duo end up taking on the cases no one else can. The script is described as having tones of Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys and Rush Hour, all landmarks in the buddy action comedy genres.”

John Wick 5

Lionsgate‘s John Wick franchise proves to be as formidable as the boogeyman himself as the studio announces John Wick: The High Table, a John Wick 4 sequel series from Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski. While Reeves is attached to executive produce, he has no plans of reprising his iconic role for the project. Still, he wants fans to know he’s on the project’s ground floor, and they should expect the same quality as the core franchise. Stahelski directs the pilot episode with plans to shop the series, which is sure to be very competitive.

Robert Levine, co-creator of The Old Man, is writing the series, which picks up directly after the stunning conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4. If you’ve seen John Wick: Chapter 4, you know that Reeves’s Baba Yaga left the High Table in disarray, with members of the criminal underworld looking to take control of the shadowy assassin network. John Wick: The High Table aims to “combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age.” Fans can expect new and existing characters to join the series, with surprises waiting around every dimly lit corner of an unforgivable criminal landscape.

Chad Stahelski, executive, produced John Wick: The High Table through his deal with Lionsgate to oversee the expansion of the John Wick universe. In addition to penning the scripts, Levine is showrunning and executive producing alongside Reeves and Thunder Road’s Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk.

In addition to John Wick: The High Table, a feature-length spinoff, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, arrives in theaters next summer. Meanwhile, a film project featuring Donnie Yen’s Caine is developing. Robert Askins, a Tony nominee for his play Hand to God and a veteran of The Umbrella Academy and AMC’s The Son, will pen the screenplay. Production for Caine kicks off in Hong Kong next year.

What do you think about the John Wick universe expanding with John Wick: The High Table? Can other actors carry the franchise into new territory without Reeves’s John Wick popping in to put bullets in heads? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Highlander

Trying to get a reboot of the 1986 classic Highlander (watch it HERE) into production has been a long, tough process. Sixteen years have gone by since the project was first announced. It’s been nearly eight years since John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski signed on to take the helm, and Henry Cavill of Man of Steel and The Witcher was cast in the lead role three years ago. Now it looks like the long wait for the Highlander reboot will be ending soon, as Stahelski has told Collider that filming begins in January!

Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the Mediterranean Film Festival in Malta, Stahelski said, “We start shooting in January in Scotland, that’s why I go right after I leave. I go to Scotland on Monday to do the final location scout. It’s another opportunity to do a property that I love. I love what it’s about, I love working with immortality and love stories through time. I think it’s a good way to take a great period piece, and sci-fi, and mix them together.

The original Highlander had the following synopsis: When the mystical Russell Nash kills a man in a sword fight in a New York City parking lot, he leaves a sliver of an ancient weapon lodged in a car in the process. After brilliant forensics specialist Brenda Wyatt recovers evidence of the mysterious weapon, she and her partner, Lt. Frank Moran, embark on an investigation of Nash that will land them in the middle of a dangerous, centuries-old feud between powerful immortals.

The Highlander reboot is believed to have a budget in the $100 million range. Stahelski is working with producer Neal H. Moritz and the estate of the late Peter S. Davis (producer of the original film) on the project. So far, Cavill is the only officially confirmed cast member, but there was a rumor that Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) might be in the running to play the main villain.

Are you looking forward to the Highlander reboot, and are you glad to hear that it will finally start filming in January? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
