Best known for playing Bill S. Preston, Esq. in the Bill & Ted movies (and for being one of the vampires in The Lost Boys), Alex Winter also has many directing credits to his name, including the 1993 cult classic oddball comedy Freaked. His latest feature directorial effort is Adulthood, which is described as a darkly comic modern noir – and Variety reports that Adulthood has secured a U.S. and Canada distribution deal with Republic Pictures. A release date has not yet been announced.

Winter provided the following statement: “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Republic Pictures for the North American sales and release of our film. They have great instincts and are dedicated to quality indie movies.

Scripted by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin, Adulthood tells the story of sister and brother Megan and Noah, who are barely hanging on in present day America. When they discover a dead body, long buried in their parents’ basement, the siblings are pulled back to the hometown they ran away from and into a rabbit hole of crime and murder.

The film stars Josh Gad (Wolf Like Me), Kaya Scodelario (Crawl), Billie Lourd (American Horror Story), and Anthony Carrigan (Barry).

Winter also appears in an acting role, and produced Adulthood with Scott Kroopf, Russell Hollander, and Lisa Wolofsky, as well as Michael Cho and Tim Lee of Olive Hill Media, and Danny Roberts, H.S. Naji, and Jackie Langelier of Fresh Fish Films. Olive Hill Media and Fresh Fish Films provided the funding. Connie Tavel serves as an executive producer alongside Mimi Rode of Olive Hill Media and Thorsten Schumacher of Rocket Science. Rocket Science is currently arranging finance for international sales.

Michael M.B. Galvin previously worked on the screenplay for the 1999 comedy Freak Talks About Sex (which was based on one of his novels) and Matthew Lillard’s 2012 feature directorial debut, Fat Kid Rules the World. On the acting side of his career, Alex Winter was most recently seen in the horror comedy Destroy All Neighbors.

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the sights he has to show us this time around by watching the trailer embedded above.

Here’s the information on the new movie: Celebrate and explore early ’90s Horror in the latest installment of the acclaimed In Search of Darkness documentary series, packed with five-and-a-half hours of critical takes, insider tales, and unheard anecdotes! Telling the stories is our incredible cast, including Heather Langenkamp (Actor, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare), John Carpenter (Director, In The Mouth of Madness), Frank Henenlotter (Director, Frankenhooker), Tim Balme (Actor, Dead Alive), Michael Gross (Actor, Tremors), and many more.

Lost Decade? Think Again! The ’90s was a much more exciting time for horror filmmaking than many people may remember, boasting an abundance of creative visions, vibrant approaches, and insane, memorable entries. Directed by David Weiner (In Search of Darkness: I-III), In Search of Darkness 1990-1994 is a fun and energetic exploration of the first half of this “lost decade,” where filmmakers lined up ’80s horror icons alongside new, darker villains, as well as capitalizing on burgeoning, cutting-edge CGI effects. By focusing on just a five year period we can celebrate everything from mainstream studio Horror classics to straight-to-video titles shot on a shoestring budget.

In Search of Darkness: 1990-1994 is packed with new stories and insights into the films you love from the legends that made them. Here are just a few of our favorite segments:

Terror on TV – Gilbert Adler (Producer, Tales From The Crypt & Freddy’s Nightmares) and Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) reminisce over the abundance of great horror TV in the ’90s while Tommy Lee Wallace (Stephen King’s It) and Mick Garris (The Stand) tell tales from their respective Stephen King miniseries.

The Emergence of CGI & AI Fears – Our contributors, including John Carpenter (Director, In The Mouth of Madness), Heather Langenkamp (Actor, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare), and Alex Winter (Actor, Freaked) cast judgment on the explosion of CGI in the early ’90s and future advancements in AI that may replace actors.

Trash Horror – We celebrate the many DIY, shot-on-video, and straight-to-video Horror movies in the ’90s, with contributions from David Dastmalchian (Actor, Late Night with the Devil), Annie Choi (Author, Bleeding Skull!), Jörg Buttgereit (Director, Nekromantik 2), and more.

Horror Villains: The New Blood – Our cast, including Bernard Rose (Director, Candyman), Robert Kurtzman (SFX, Misery), Doug Bradley (Actor, Hellraiser franchise), examine how movies such as MiseryCandyman, and Silence of the Lambs saw new villains emerge to contend with franchise favorites.

In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994 is expected to be released in November. You can learn more about the documentary, and secure your own copy of it, by clicking over to the official website HERE.

Station! After embarking on an excellent adventure for the 2020 comedy Bill & Ted Face the Music, Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix) and Alex Winter (Lost Boys, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey) are reuniting for a Broadway production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in fall 2025, with Jamie Lloyd directing.

Waiting for Godot revolves around two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who engage in various conversations while awaiting the arrival of Godot, who never appears. The two-act play finds Vladimir and Estragon comparing hardships and meeting strangers crossing their paths. As the two men wait for Godot’s fabled arrival, existentialism takes hold, bringing their existence and anticipation of meeting Godot into question. Confusion, suicidal thoughts, and indecision plague the duo as they weigh options.

Keanu Reeves plays Estragon in the play, while Alex Winter plays Vladimir. The production unfolds at an ATG (Ambassador Theatre Group) theater.

“We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” Reeves and Winter said in a joint statement.

“It is a real honor to be collaborating with the brilliant Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter on Samuel Beckett’s sublime masterpiece — one of the greatest plays of all time,” Lloyd added.

Further details about Reeves and Winter’s Waiting for Godot, including additional casting, creative teams, and more, remain a mystery.

Keanu Reeves shared news about his upcoming BRZRKR adaptation at San Diego Comic-Con, saying Terminator Zero screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will serve as showrunner for the anticipated project. Work on the anime intends to start this fall.

“We all have a very special place in our hearts for the Animatrix,” said Boom! Studios president Stephen Christy during the panel. “So when we were lucky enough to get an opportunity to collaborate with Netflix on the movie, we just don’t just want to present a movie. We would like to do an adult anime. To have Mattson [Tomlin], who is doing the Terminator as he mentioned…I think we’re oging to have a chance to go to some of the worlds that you see in the comics, the specials…and hopefully it’ll pay tribute to the anime that we love as fans.”

Bill & Ted 4

2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music felt like a fitting enough way to bid a bodacious farewell to the titular time traveling rockers. But if Alex Winter aka Bill S. Preston, Esquire, is to be believed, the pair may be partying on yet again for a Bill & Ted 4.

Appearing on The Sarah O’Connell Show, Winter said Bill & Ted 4 is already in the preliminary stages of being planned, citing trilogy writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. “The gang…we’re tinkering with a fourth movie idea that all of us like… and the guys are going to write, so we’ll see. I mean it takes us time to get these things going, and we never want to do them unless they’re great.” He went on to call the writers “super talented” but noted that “they feel the same way: it has to be right…We love [the movies] because they’re oddball and they’re not kind of typical mainstream films. They’ve never been cash-grab movies…so we really do make them like sincerely from a place of love and interest.”

So, what could a potential Bill & Ted 4 be about? “There’s a really good idea the writers came up with for a fourth that’s kind of obvious. I don’t want to give it away…but it is a really great idea and kind of an obvious idea.” Winter concluded, “It will get written and then we’ll see when we can actually get it made. It may be a little while.”

For those who saw Bill & Ted Face the Music, it clearly established that Billie & Thea, the daughters of Bill & Ted, could carry on the legacy of their old men (and we do mean old judging by the post-credits scene). Could we end up getting Billie & Thea’s Excellent Adventure? Considering how long it took a third movie to get off the ground, we may be waiting for quite some time to find out exactly what Bill & Ted 4 will offer…

Released in August 2020, Bill & Ted Face the Music did well during the Covid-19 pandemic, pulling in a reported $32 million from video-on-demand sales, with another $6.8 million at the box office.

What are your thoughts? Is the idea of a Bill & Ted 4 excellent or bogus? Let us know below!

PLOT: Struggling prog-rock musician William Brown finds himself in a living nightmare when he accidentally kills Vlad, the neighbor from hell.

REVIEW: We’ve all had neighbors that make too much noise and drive us crazy right? It almost feels like a rite of passage. The bass of their music pierces every corner of your mind as you’re just trying to live your life. Every footstep sounds like the stomping of an elephant. But what if, when trying to defuse the situation, you somehow manage to murder them? Destroy All Neighbors takes this concept, adds in some prog rock and wonderful creature FX, and gives us a fun time at the movies.

William Brown (as played by Jonah Ray) is a bit of a loser—at least, that’s what the film will try to convince you of. But despite living in a craphole apartment, the man has a loving girlfriend and a job at a recording studio. In reality, he isn’t doing quite as poorly as he is in his mind. But there’s no telling him that, as he obsesses over finishing his mythical first album. I’ve been following Ray since his Meltdown/Nerdist days, so it’s cool to see him in a lead role. His devolution into a madman isn’t entirely believable, as it ramps up rather quickly. But it’s a fun ride getting there.

Alex Winter and Jonah Ray in Destroy All Neighbors (2024).

The real highlight of Destroy All Neighbors is Alex Winter as Vlad. I’m sure most of us remember Winter as his turn as Bill from Bill and Ted. Though it may be more apropos to think of his role in He’s absolutely unrecognizable as Will’s new neighbor. The makeup FX work is great and he completely disappears behind it. There are no instances where Winter’s natural voice comes through. He’s really giving the role his all. And I enjoyed that they were able to give him an out-of-makeup role as well. But it’s the character himself that stands out so much, as practically plays a game with Will–taunting him. It’s like he wants Will to reach his potential but goes about it in a very strange way.

Thomas Lennon and Kumail Nanjiani show up but each of their roles is rather brief. I guess when you’ve got cool friends, you want them in your movies. I could have gone for a little more use for them concerning the plot. They get some of the biggest laughs so it wasn’t all for naught. But this is really the Jonah Ray show, being the centerpiece of the action. There’s a little Ash Williams to his physical comedy which will always be a positive to this horror fan. Plus, I’ll always get a kick out of someone getting sprayed in the face with blood.

Jonah Ray in Destroy All Neighbors (2023).

The opening credits are so loud and colorful that it sets the stage perfectly for what’s to come. I really wasn’t expecting this movie to lean in so hard to the craziness. But it did and I enjoyed it even more because of it. Destroy All Neighbors goes very practical with the FX which really adds to the charm. These are of the Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters variety, so it almost feels straight from the past. Not bad company to be in however. There’s a coziness present, despite all the ooey-gooey effects.

I half expected Destroy All Neighbors to end with a “none of this really happened” style twist. The direction they head in is equally silly but it works for the plot. I liked the overall message of standing up for yourself. It’s always interesting to see how something like this can be a little sweet amongst all the carnage. I’m sure a lot of that has to do with my own messed-up sensibilities but it worked for me. While the jokes don’t always land, I love the world that is created here and I wish I could see more adventures with Vlad.

Jonah Ray Rodrigues, who is best-known for mocking movies through his hosting gig on Mystery Science Theater 3000, has teamed up with Bill S. Preston Esq. himself, Alex Winter, to star in the splatter horror comedy Destroy All Neighbors, a Shudder Original that’s scheduled to start streaming on the Shudder service this Friday, January 12th. In anticipation of the film’s release, we’ve gotten our hands on an EXCLUSIVE clip that shows Rodrigues’s character discussing prog with a severed head! You can check it out in the embed above.

Music video director Josh Forbes, who made his feature directorial debut with Contracted: Phase II, takes the helm of Destroy All Neighbors, which sports a title that’s clearly a nod to the classic Godzilla movie Destroy All Monsters. Forbes was working from a screenplay written by Mike Benner, Jared Logan, and Charles A. Pieper. The story begins when William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him. But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla. DESTROY ALL NEIGHBORS is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood.

Thomas Lennon, Randee Heller, Jon Daly, Phil Hendrie, Chase Kim, Kiran Deol, Ryan Kattner, Christian Calloway, Madara Jayasena, Franco Vega, and DeMorge Brown are also in the cast.

Rodrigues and Winter produced the film alongside Russell Sanzgiri. Winter previously promised, “Our film is a return to the kind of physical effects-driven genre comedy that’s all too rare these days.“ Which was enough to sell me on it.

For years, Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net has been about two things only – awesome art and the artists that create it. With that in mind, we thought why not take the first week of the month to showcase these awesome artists even more? Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. If you are an awesome artist or know someone that should be featured, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.This month we are very pleased to bring you the awesome art of…

JOBLO: What got you started as an artist?
VICTOR:
I’ve always liked drawing since I was a little kid. Drawing on walls, drawing on notebooks during class, or drawing on desks. That last one was not the most appropriate surface to draw on; especially during an exam. Even though I enjoyed drawing, I never expected to make a living as an artist. Thankfully when it came time for college, my parents suggested I take a career aptitude test. The results showed I liked art/computers and it suggested graphic design. I had no idea what graphic design was but I figured that if I could make art and make a living, then I was all for it. Over the next four years, I learned what graphic design was and how to use it. I ended up graduating with bfa in graphic design and illustration. While I was happy to have a job in graphic design, I really wanted to work in entertainment. After that I spent my evenings and weekends working on my portfolio till I was finally able to land my dream job of designing movie posters. These days I do design work in entertainment advertising and work on my own illustration artwork on the weekends.

Who were some of your favorite artists growing up?
As a kid I enjoyed reading goosebumps but what I really loved was the covers by Tim Jacobus. They were always so vibrant and colorful. I love using color in my own work so for sure an inspiration.

Another artist I liked was Chuck Jones, animator and director for Looney Tunes. I enjoyed watching Looney Tunes as a kid and drawing the characters all over my book school book covers.

The art of Mark Fredrickson on the Mead No Rules folders really captured my eye. The perspective on each one was always interesting and the color like the goosebumps covers was so vibrant.

As I grew older, I appreciated illustrators of movie posters John Alvin, Bob Peak, and Drew Struzan. The ability to show what a movie was about based off one image was inspiring.

Milton Glaser was also one of my favorites when I was in college studying graphic design. He is another artist whose use of color has inspired me.

Who do you really dig these days, follow on Instagram?
Enjoy their posters:
Oliver Barrett, Dan Schlitzkus, Vance Kelly, Marie Bergeron, Laurent Durieux

Enjoy their use of color:
Doaly, Matt Taylor, Barry Blankenship, Robert Sammelin, Jonathan Bartlett

Enjoy their Poster concepts:
Eileen Steinbach, Julien Rico Jr, Phantom City Creative, Thomas Walker

Enjoy their Illustration style:
Patrick Ballesteros, Dan Hipp, Audrey Estok, Nicky Barkla

What advice would you have for budding artists today?
Be persistent while going at your own pace. Burnout is real. Whether that’s drawing, working on your portfolio, posting to social media, you need to go at a sustainable pace. It’s something that’s helped me achieve certain goals. I may not have time to draw everyday and that’s fine. Life gets in the way. Sometimes I end up picking things up a week or three later.

What should we be looking out for from you in the future?
I recently started attending conventions as an artists alley exhibitor and it has been a great experience. It’s always exciting to talk to other people who like art, or aspire to be artists themselves. I’ve been wanting to do more horror movies and wrestling posters lately. I’m planning on focusing on those in the near future. Once I get enough done I might start attending horror and wrestling cons.

Jonah Ray Rodrigues, who is best-known for mocking movies through his hosting gig on Mystery Science Theater 3000, has teamed up with Bill S. Preston Esq. himself, Alex Winter, to star in the splatter horror comedy Destroy All Neighbors, a Shudder Original that’s scheduled to start streaming on Shudder on January 12th. With one week to go until that release date arrives, Shudder has unveiled a batch of characters posters – and you can check them out at the bottom of this article!
