Beef, season 2, Netflix, Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan

Netflix confirmed today that Beef season 2 is officially moving forward. The new season of the critically acclaimed anthology series will star Oscar Isaac (Scenes From a Marriage), Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman), Charles Melton (May December), and Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus).

Here’s the logline for Beef season 2: “A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.” The season will consist of eight 30-minute episodes. Lee Sung Jin returns to serve as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, and Jake Schreier also executive produce.

The first season of Beef followed “the aftermath of a road rage incident between two strangers. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), a failing contractor with a chip on his shoulder, goes head-to-head with Amy Lau (Ali Wong), a self-made entrepreneur with a picturesque life. The increasing stakes of their feud unravel their lives and relationships in this darkly comedic and deeply moving series.” The series has been picking up plenty of awards over the last few months, including eight wins at the Emmy Awards last month, including Outstand Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Yeun, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Wong.

Our own Alex Maidy was one of those who loved the first season of Beef. “I can think of a few series that can compare with the amount of funny and tragedy in Beef while presenting two equally stellar performances from the lead actors,” Maidy wrote. “Steven Yeun and Ali Wong had already proven themselves talented, but Lee Sung Jin’s Beef elevates them to a new level. Beef is an incredibly engrossing series from the very first scene and is sure to have everyone talking when it premieres on Netflix. Beef is not the series I was expecting it to be based on the trailer, but it is so much better than I was hoping for.” You can check out the rest of Maidy’s review right here.

What do you think of the new cast for Beef season 2?

Glass Onion, Knives Out 3

The series of murder mysteries that began with the 2019 film Knives Out and continued with the 2022 film Glass Onion is set to keep on going with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which has writer/director Rian Johnson back at the helm. Johnson and his collaborators are being very secretive about this project right now, but there’s a lot of hype for it – so we figured this would be a good time to start assembling a list of Everything We Know About Wake Up Dead Man. Here we go:

TITLE

Johnson got the title Knives Out from a Radiohead song. When it came time to make the sequel Glass Onion, he got the title from a song by The Beatles. So it’s only fitting that the third film in the franchise have a song-inspired title as well. But while Radiohead and The Beatles were from England, the band that inspired the third title originates from Ireland. The band is U2, and they released a song called “Wake Up Dead Man” back in 1997. We probably shouldn’t expect to glean much about the film from the lyrics, even if Glass Onion did actually feature a glass onion and Johnson said the title would give a hint as to where the story is going… but we can look them over and try. The lyrics have someone who feels alone in the world crying out to Jesus Christ, hoping to earn a place in Heaven when they reach the end of their life. The chorus, of course, gives us the line “Wake Up Dead Man.” And one particularly intriguing verse goes like this: “Were you just around the corner? Did you think to try and warn her? Or are you working on something new? If there’s an order in all of this disorder, is it like a tape recorder? Can we rewind it just once more?”

Some fans have the feeling that Wake Up Dead Man might be darker than the previous two movies, while others are leaning into the idea that it could be a musical, since Johnson is a big fan of Broadway musicals.

One thing we know is that Johnson isn’t happy about these films having A Knives Out Mystery as their subtitles, as he feels it would be more appropriate to call them A Benoit Blanc Mystery. But Knives Out is what he’s stuck with.

STORY

We don’t know anything about the story, which is how it should be when you’re looking forward to a mystery. We can probably expect somebody to get killed at some point, and it will be up to private investigator Benoit Blanc to figure out “who done it.” Whatever the story may be, the film is likely to have a different tone from Glass Onion, which itself had a different tone from Knives Out, being bigger and more over-the-top than its predecessor. Johnson has said that the third film will be “very, very different” from Glass Onion, and told Variety that “The goal is to strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.” He recently took to his X account to say, “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from John Dickson Carr to Agatha Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies.

CAST

Any Knives Out mystery has to have an impressive cast. At the heart of each film, we have Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, and then Johnson builds awesome supporting casts around him. Knives Out co-starred Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Frank Oz, Riki Lindhome, Christopher Plummer, M. Emmet Walsh, Noah Segan, and more. Glass Onion had Craig sharing the screen with Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Noah Segan, with cameos from the likes of Ethan Hawke, Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Yo-Yo Ma, Jake Tapper, and Serena Williams. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also had vocal cameos in both films.

Since the announcement of the title, we’ve been bombarded with Wake Up Dead Man casting news. This time around, Craig will be co-starring with Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Josh O’Connor (The Crown), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Andrew Scott (Ripley), Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere), Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Mila Kunis (That 70s Show), Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction), and Jeremy Renner (Avengers: Endgame) – whose likeness was featured on a hot sauce in Glass Onion. Details on the characters they’ll be playing are being kept under wraps. We’re also not sure if Hugh Grant (Notting Hill) will be showing up as Phillip, Benoit’s domestic partner who had a cameo in the previous film.

Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) has let it be known that he wants to be in Wake Up Dead Man, but he hasn’t gotten his wish so far.

On the first day of filming, June 10th, Johnson shared this image of Daniel Craig on set, back in character as Benoit Blanc:

wake up dead man, knives out

Josh O’Connor and Glenn Close have since been spotted on set, in their character wardrobe. Not surprisingly, given the title, they appear to be filming a funeral scene:

After two months of filming, Wake Up Dead Man wrapped production by August 18th. Just like he did for the start of filming, Johnson marked the occasion by sharing an image to social media:

TWO-PICTURE DEAL

While Knives Out was a Lionsgate release, the franchise made the jump to the Netflix streaming service when Netflix offered Craig, Johnson, and Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman 469 million dollars to make two Knives Out sequels for them. The first was Glass Onion and Wake Up Dead Man will be the second, so the deal will be wrapped up and we’ll have to wait and see if Johnson and Craig want to re-team for any more Benoit Blanc mysteries in the future.

Johnson has previously told Variety, “If each one of these can really be what Agatha Christie did, if it can be not just in a totally new location and a new cast, but also trying something exciting, I’ll keep doing it as long as Daniel [Craig] and I are having a good time. I’ll keep making these as long as they let me.” He also told Jess Cagle, “The same way Agatha Christie wrote a bunch of Poirot novels, we can do that with Blanc and keep making new mysteries, you know, whole new cast, whole new location, whole new mystery, it’s just another Beniot Blanc mystery. There’s so many different things you could do with it.

PRODUCTION AND RELEASE

On May 24th, Johnson said Wake Up Dead Man would be heading into production soon, and when he announced the title, the announcement video promised that we’ll be seeing the film sometime in 2025.

And that’s everything we know about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery… so far…

Alien: Romulus, reactions

No doubt Alien: Romulus has been one of our most anticipated movies of 2024. Despite the overall tepid — or Alien 3-level — response to everything after James Cameron’s Aliens, the franchise maintains a strong fan base. So, how does Romulus rank amongst the other entries? Are we going to check it out on opening weekend or are we going to get away from her?

With Alien: Romulus having screened earlier this week ahead of its August 16th release, let’s check out some of the initial reactions from social media:

The high praise for Romulus is one thing but calling out a stellar third act in particular drums up even more excitement for the movie than there has been before. Indeed, it seems that it will be firing on all cylinders in that finale:

We pretty much knew that the creature designs would be a major draw, too, but it’s awesome to hear that this holds on the big screen. Obviously the Xenomorph designs are some of the most iconic creatures in film history thanks to H.R. Giger. Even in the worst of the Aliens franchise they are still a sight to behold; but now that we know Romulus looks to be ranking possibly in the top three of the series, director Fede Álvarez has a combo that looks to be just what the series needs. (Appropriately enough, Romulus is set between the events of 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens.)

As for other industry reactions, Ridley Scott himself praised Alien: Romulus to the director after a private screening, saying, “Fede, what can I say? It’s f*cking great.” And this is the guy who directed the original Alien! Then again, he is also responsible for Covenant, so…

As for what else we can expect with Romulus, here is the plot: “The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Now that the first reactions to Alien: Romulus are out, are you more excited for the movie? Are you surprised it has lived up to the hype?

Alien: Romulus

Just like Ripley and Bishop in Aliens, the character played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) in director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (which is set to reach theatres on August 16th) wears Reebok sneakers – and just like Reebok has sold replicas of Ripley and Bishop’s “Alien Stomper” sneakers in recent years, they’ll also be selling limited edition sneakers that match those worn by Spaeny in Alien: Romulus! Called the Reebok Alien: Romulus sneaker, this shoe is built upon Reebok Basketball’s iconic BB4000 II frame. It will go up for sale on the Reebok website at 9pm PT / 12am ET on August 26th / 27th, and will be going for the price of $170.

Geek Culture informs us that the Alien: Romulus Reebok features an all-leather upper, distressed film-worn finish along with a Weyland-Yutani logo on the tongue and heel. The EVA foam midsole, and a solid rubber cupsole with a grippy traction pattern provides extra grip, perfect for bug hunting, or stomping in this case. An image of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article.

When Alien: Romulus was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked if he still wanted to make an Alien movie. Clearly, the answer was yes. 20th Century Studios division president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch. It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“

It has also been said that the story Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues crafted for Alien: Romulus is not connected to the other films in the Alien franchise – but it’s not ignoring any of the other entries, either. Álvarez has been clear about the fact that his story takes place within the established franchise continuity. In fact, it slots right in between the events of Alien and Aliens. It has the following official logline: The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

Spaeny is joined in the cast by Isabela Merced (Madame Web), David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has previously said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away. Graphic and gruesome is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

We’re just ten days away from having the chance to see director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, which is set to reach theatres on August 16th – and to mark the occasion, a pair of new promos have arrived online to introduce the character played by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), reveal some more footage… and give away some secrets in the process. Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th… and cast member Isabela Merced (Madame Web) believes this movie is going to be scarring some viewers for life. That’s what she told Total Film, and the magazine has also unveiled a few new images from the film. Those can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Merced said, “I really do believe that there are specific sequences in this film that will scar some kids that sneak into the movie for life.” Her co-star David Jonsson (Industry) also hyped the film’s scares and gore, saying, “You can definitely say goodbye to a 12A (rating). The halfway house with Fede is just not his style. If you’re going to try and scare people, then you scare them.” Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) added, “(Fede is always) waiting to do something strange and twisted. And you know he’s got it when you’re right on the edge of going, ‘Should we do this?’ That’s when you know, ‘OK, Fede is in his sweet spot.’

When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the trailer HERE and check out the poster HERE), and the movie will be receiving coverage in an upcoming issue of the French movie magazine Cinema Teaser. In fact, the cover image on that issue of Cinema Teaser, which reaches store shelves on July 3rd, features Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) facing off with a xenomorph! The folks at AVP Galaxy have scrubbed the text off that cover image, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

As AVP Galaxy mentions, the image is reminiscent of a piece of Alien: Covenant promo material that showed Michael Fassbender facing off with a xenomorph. It also brings to mind that iconic shot from Alien 3 that showed a xenomorph getting close to Sigourney Weaver.

Spaeny is joined in the cast by David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Merced has said there’s a scene in the film that’s so disgusting that a lot of viewers will have to look away, so that goes along with the “graphic and gruesome” description. “Graphic and gruesome” is what we expected from this movie as soon as it was announced that it was being made by the director of Evil Dead 2013 and Don’t Breathe. It has received an R rating for bloody violent content and language.

This new Alien movie is coming to us from Momentum and 20th Century Studios, with Ridley Scott producing through his Scott Free banner.

Alien: Romulus

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser HERE), and during a recent interview he said that the film starts off reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s Alien, then gradually becomes more like James Cameron’s Aliens. Now, in an interview with Empire, Álvarez continued talking about the ways Alien: Romulus blends Alien and Aliens, while Empire unveiled a new image from the film, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott.

Álvarez told Empire, “To ask an Alien fan to choose between [Alien and Aliens] is a perverse question. So I thought, ‘How do I do both?’” So Alien: Romulus will follow slow-build scares like in Alien with a Xenomorph assault like in Aliens, and the blending of the two even extends to the set design. As Empire notes, the galactic Renaissance Station where the story takes place is split into two sections, with the design of the section called Remus being reminiscent of Alien and the design of the more advanced section called Romulus being reminiscent of Aliens. Álvarez says, “There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo. Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens].

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home).

The new image features Spaeny and Jonsson, and you can find out what Álvarez had to say about Jonsson’s character at the Empire link.
