For those who haven’t dug into Apple TV Plus’s Disclaimer yet, let me tell you that you’re missing out on one of the most provocative shows of the year. Written and directed by the legendary Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men), with cinematography duties split between Emmanuel Lubezki and Bruno Delbonnel, it’s an impeccably crafted limited series. It ranks up there with Twin Peaks: The Return and True Detective: Season One in how it’s proof that the limited series can indeed be a director’s medium if they’re given free rein, and how the long format can push them toward storytelling experimentation they’d never get the opportunity to try in a conventional film.

In Disclaimer, Cate Blanchett plays Catherine Ravenscroft, a celebrated journalist being harassed by a retired school teacher (Kevin Kline), who is convinced she’s responsible for the death of his son. Over the course of seven episodes, we see how Blanchett’s character had an illicit affair many years ago while on holiday and how its fallout destroyed several lives. Recently, I was lucky enough to interview two of the key players involved with Disclaimer

First up was the legendary Sacha Baron Cohen, who delivered a powerful, dramatic performance as Robert Ravenscroft, Catherine’s wealthy husband, whose world comes apart when he realizes Catherine was unfaithful to him and may have been involved with the death of the person she had an affair with. It’s a strong, dark-edged performance for Cohen, and speaking to him was a real treat.

I also got to chat with up-and-coming actress Leila George, who plays the young Catherine and has one of the show’s meatiest roles. It’s a star-making performance for her, and she spoke glowingly of her work with Cuaron, who she mentioned shot all seven hours of the show as if it was one long move rather than conventional TV.

Last year, when Damien Leone made the announcement that Art the Clown would be getting a Christmas-themed sequel releasing October 2024, I’m not sure any of us expected it to dethrone the Clown Prince of Crime at the box office. But that’s exactly what happened and now the franchise seems to be positioned to give horror fans everything they’ve ever wanted. By avoiding studio dollars, Leone’s vision is uncompromising. This means gore, gore, gore! But it also means a relationship built with fans where, by giving them something truly shocking, Terrifier is in a place that no horror film has been in decades: one of complete creative freedom. Which makes the future of the series more tantalizing than ever.

When I spoke to Damien last year for the Terrifier 2, he was antsy about a certain kill in 3. So now that we’re speaking again, I made sure to ask the Terrifier 3 director about which kill that happened to be. And it may surprise you. But it wasn’t just the writer/director I was lucky enough to speak to as Chris Jericho also joined in on the fun. As shown by his appearance at the end of 2, any expectation of a lengthy role would be a mistake. We got into just how last-minute Jericho’s scene happened as well as the process of getting prosthetics for his face made. I can only imagine how happy both are now that Terrifier 3 is the number-one film in the country. Terrifier fans should get a kick out of this behind-the-scenes insight on the third entry.

TERRIFIER 3 plot synopsis: Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.

A collaboration between writers and directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, the genre-bending dark comedy Rumours screened out of competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and now a wider audience will have the chance to watch the movie when it reaches theatres this Friday, October 18th. In anticipation of the film’s release, we were able to sit down for an interview with its star, two-time Oscar winner (and many-time Oscar nominee) Cate Blanchett, as well as the directors and Blanchett’s co-stars Denis Ménochet, Roy Dupuis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Rolando Ravello. To find out what they had to say about the movie, check out the video embedded above!

Rumours has the following synopsis: Ricocheting between comedy, apocalyptic horror, and swooning soap opera, Rumours follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies at the annual G7 summit, where they attempt to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis. With unexpected, uproarious performances from a brilliant ensemble cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, and Charles Dance, these so-called leaders become spectacles of incompetence, contending with increasingly surreal obstacles in the misty woods as night falls and they realize they are suddenly alone. A genre-hopping satire of political ineptitude, the latest film from incomparable directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson is a journey into the absurd heart of power and institutional failure in a slowly burning world.

Liz Jarvis, Phillip Kreuzer, and Lars Knudsen produced the film, with Blanchett serving as an executive producer alongside Ari Aster, Phyllis Laing, Jorg Schulze, Jow Neurauter, Tyler Campellone, Adrian Love, Michael O’Leary, Andrew Karpen, and Kent Sanderson.

Are you looking forward to checking out Rumours? Watch our interviews with Cate Blanchett, the directors, and Blanchett’s fellow cast members, then let us know what you thought by leaving a comment below.

Two years ago, we heard that American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson had signed on to star in a horror thriller called Dust, which would be released as a Hulu Original. That film has since made its way out into the world under the title Hold Your Breath, having been released through the Hulu streaming service on October 3rd – and not only do we have a review of the movie that can be read HERE and press day interviews that can be found HERE, but we also caught up with the cast and filmmakers when they were on the red carpet at the film’s premiere! JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to speak with the film’s stars Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes), and Alona Jane Robbins (Law & Order), directors William Joines and Karrie Crouse, plus Natasha Ofili of The Politician and Creed III. To find out what they had to say, check out the video embedded above!

Coming to us from Searchlight Pictures, Hold Your Breath marks the feature directorial debut of Joines and Crouse. Crouse wrote the screenplay for the film, which has the following synopsis: In 1930s Oklahoma, amid the region’s horrific dust storms, a woman is convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family. Another synopsis let us know that the story centers on a woman who is trapped by increasingly perilous dust storms and is haunted by her past encounters with a threatening presence and takes extraordinary measures to protect her family.

Paulson, Miller, and Robbins are joined in the cast by Bill Heck (I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series), Annaleigh Ashford (Masters of Sex), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear). In addition to American Horror Story, Paulson’s credits include American Crime Story, Ratched, Mrs. America, Run, Glass, Bird Box, Ocean’s Eight, 12 Years a Slave, Mud, New Year’s Eve, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Cupid, The Spirit, Diggers, The Notorious Bettie Page, Serenity, Deadwood, Down with Love, What Women Want, The Other Sister, and American Gothic, among other things.

Alix Madigan and Lucas Joaquin produced Hold Your Breath, with Paulson serving as executive producer. Searchlight Production heads DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas oversaw the project with the company’s Director of Development Zahra Phillips.

Have you watched Hold Your Breath? If so, let us know what you thought of it by leaving a comment below – after taking a look at our red carpet interviews, of course.

Netflix’s Outer Banks absolutely took over the streaming service in 2020. While all of us were stuck inside, a group of teens exploring outdoors appealed to many. It was like watching grown-up Goonies. Only less sad. And it has continued that success even post-Pandemic, with its fourth season set to release October 10th. After the cliffhanger at the end of Season 3, I’m sure fans are chomping at the bit to find out what happens to the Pogues.

Having not watched the series before, I did a quick catchup so I could talk to the cast of the show. That’s right, we talked to Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Rudy Pankow, Drew Starkey, J.D., and Carlacia Grant about their experience during Season 4. From their rituals to help them get into character, to their favorite places in the filming location of Charleston, South Carolina, we get into it all. But my favorite moment probably came when I asked them about life lessons they’ve taken from TV/Film. It’s a very fun moment and worth a look in the video above. We even had to cut a little portion out as they talked about the second half of the season (which doesn’t release until November 7th). So if you’re a fan, there may be some hints at what’s to come.

OUTER BANKS: SEASON 4 plot synopsis: Following last season’s 18-month flash-forward showing Wes Genrette’s proposal for the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure, Season 4 takes us back in time to the lead-up of that moment. After finding the gold at El Dorado, the Pogues return to the OBX and commit to having a “normal” life. They’ve built themselves a new safe haven, officially dubbed “Poguelandia 2.0”, where they live together and run a fairly successful bait, tackle, and charter tour shop. But after some financial setbacks, John B, Sarah, Kiara, JJ, Pope, and Cleo take Wes up on his offer, drawn back into the “G” game for a whole new adventure. But before they know it, they’re well in over their heads, with dangerous new enemies hot on their heels racing them to the treasure. Meanwhile, their problems are only growing, and they’re forced to question their past, present, and future – who they really are, has it all been worth it, and how much are they willing to risk?

OUTER BANKS: SEASON 4: PART 1 STREAMS ON NETFLIX ON OCTOBER 10TH, 2024 WITH PART 2 RELEASING NOVEMBER 7TH, 2024.

In the four decades he has released films, director Kevin Smith has done everything from romantic comedies to epic fantasy comedies to animated comedies and even horror comedies. While Smith certainly has a niche audience that has stuck with him since the 1990s, the director has never shied away from making movies he would have loved to have watched and movies he feels personally connected with. Smith has continued producing and fostering other projects while making his own films, and his latest project may be one of his best.

The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age tale set in the 1980s when hanging out with your friends at the local multiplex was the height of entertainment. Inspired by the director’s own youth in suburban New Jersey, The 4:30 Movie is distinct from Smith’s other movies in many ways. While it does not feature Jay or Silent Bob, the movie does connect nicely back to elements from the ViewAskewniverse without being beholden to the films that came before it. With solid supporting turns from Jason Lee, Ken Jeong, Genesis Rodriguez, Jason Mewes, Sam Richardson, and many more stalwarts from Smith’s repertory players, the real stars are the young lead actors played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo, Reed Northrup, and Siena Agudong.

I chatted with writer/director Kevin Smith about the movie, which was, surprisingly, one he was not fully confident in. Smith shared how my review and others helped him regain faith in The 4:30 Movie after the Sundance Film Festival rejected it. We also talked about whether Smith would ever make a Grindhouse-style film full of nothing but fake trailers and the mid-credit scene that connects The 4:30 Movie back to the start of Smith’s career. Check out the full interview in the embed above.

The 4:30 Movie is available on digital.

Sarah Paulson has made quite a name for herself starring in various entries of the American Horror Story series. She’s put on a bevy a great performances and is always trying vastly different things. Annaleigh Ashford has been incredible on Broadway for years and in the great-for-one-season-and-inexplicably-terrible-in-its-second series, B Positive. The two Tony Award winners combine forces for the Hulu horror film, Hold Your Breath. While I wasn’t a massive fan of the film (check out my review HERE) there’s no doubt that their performances are incredible.

It was clear that the most important element for both actresses was to get across the point that the 1930s Dust Bowl was man-made. This makes the story, despite its period setting, have a modern problem. But don’t worry, the film isn’t just about dried-up crops, as it mostly contends with Paulson’s Margaret going crazy during the drought. A descent into madness is always an intriguing story element in horror and Paulson does a great job. I talked to her about the challenges of the role and how she was able to keep track of her character’s insanity despite filming out of order. It was a great talk so make sure to check out the video above!

HOLD YOUR BREATH plot synopsis:

Oklahoma, 1930s. The Bellum family house rests in a valley of dirt as clouds of dust blot out the sun. Margaret (Sarah Paulson) and her two daughters, Rose (Amiah Miller) and Ollie (Alona Jane Robbins), tend to their sparse farm while Margaret’s husband has left in pursuit of work. As they struggle to survive the punishing Dust Bowl environment, a mysterious stranger (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) arrives, threatening all they know and love. But is the threat a closer one?

HOLD YOUR BREATH IS STREAMING ON HULU ON OCTOBER 3RD, 2024.

If you were around in the 90s then chances are you remember the Menendez Murders. Two brothers murdering their parents in cold blood is something you’d expect to read in the movie headlines yet this was real life in Beverly Hills. Their trial was one of many sensationalized trials at the time, with society being obsessed with Court TV. After Dahmer saw massive success for Netflix, Ryan Murphy decided to take aim at another popular trial (with Ed Gein being the subject for Season 3). And with the details a bit murkier this time around, Murphy takes the approach of having nearly every episode feature a different perspective/theory. This results in the show having a lot of conflicts in what actually happened, in the name of trying to tell all sides to the story. Our TV Critic Alex Maidy didn’t love the show but appreciated the performances.

I was fortunate enough to talk to the entire cast about Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny got into some of the brutal accusations against the parents. Nathan Lane and Ari Graynor may have been enemies in the show, but they couldn’t be more welcoming in an interview setting. Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez discussed the fantastic fifth episode which sees Cooper in a nearly 35-minute take. And given that Erik Menendez has come out against the show, I had to ask Cooper which episode he would show Erik to get him on board for the show. So be sure to check out my wonderful conversation with the whole cast in the video above.

Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night has earned rave reviews (including from us) from the festival circuit and is now poised to hit theaters. It opens today in limited release before expanding nationwide on October 11th, which actually marks the 49th anniversary of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live. The movie documents the frantic ninety-minute lead-up to the show’s premiere, depicting how it all very nearly went off the rails for a young Lorne Michaels, who’s played here by The Fabelmans star Gabriel LaBelle.

While the film was playing at TIFF (Toronto International Film Fest), we had a chance to sit down and chat with most of the young cast playing all of the various SNL legends. In addition to Gabriel Labelle, we spoke to rising star Rachel Sennott, who plays SNL writer Rose Shuster, Dylan O’Brien, who makes for a surprisingly uncanny Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith, who is earning raves for his role as Chevy Chase, plus Anna and the Apocalypse star Ella Hunt, who plays Gilda Radner, and the great Lamorne Morris, who plays Garrett Morris (no relation).

Check out the interviews above, and make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the release of Saturday Night. It’s one of the most entertaining movies of the year, and it does a pretty incredible job depicting just how chaotic the behind-the-scenes atmosphere was on SNL before it went on air and how close it came to all falling apart.

Saturday Night has the following synopsis: At 11:30pm on October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television – and culture – forever. Saturday Night is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live. Full of humor, chaos, and the magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, we count down the minutes in real time until we hear those famous words…

Saturday Night Live legend Andy Samberg’s had a heck of a career on the big screen, with him having more than a few cult classics under his belt. There’s Hot Rod, the criminally underrated Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, plus the more recent Palm Springs. However, he’s rarely gotten to tackle straight drama, but he’s getting his chance this week in Lee, a long-gestating biopic of famed war photographer Lee Miller, who began life as a model before becoming one of the most noted war photographers of her time, famous for chronicling WW2 in the pages of Vogue Magazine.

In Lee, Samberg plays David Scherman, who was one of Miller’s contemporaries at Vogue and shot a famous photograph of Miller in Adolf Hitler’s bathtub in his Munich apartment. We also chatted with the great Andrea Riseborough, who was Oscar-nominated recently for To Leslie but is perhaps most famous to genre fans such as us here at JoBlo for her roles in Possessor and Mandy. In Lee, she plays Audrey Withers, another journalist working for Vogue. Our man Jimmy O was able to catch up with Samberg and Riseborough at the recent Los Angeles junket for Lee, and both raved about working with the great Kate Winslet on her passion project.

Check back for our review of Lee soon! Check out the interview embedded above!
